Seokguram is located near the tummit of Mt. Tohamsan, east of the historic city of Gyeongju, capital of the Silla dynasty (57B.C.-A.D.935).
Whoever the patron or whatever the motivation, Seokguram was apparently designed as a private chapel for royalty considering its scale, philosophical depth and aesthetic standard, whereas Bulguksa, a grand complex of various worship halls and pagodas, was intended as a state monastery to serve the public.
Seokguram is meticulously designed to guide the faithful into the holy and of the Buddha, a mysterious spiritual journey to the realm of nirvana in a limited span of time and space.

Seokguram Grotto, believed to be the eastern terminal of the old Silk Road, is located a considerable distance up Mt. T'oham from Bulguksa Temple in Kyoungju National Park, South Korea.
The artistic importance of Seokguram's stone carvings is readily apparent, as the main rotunda, just beyond two imposing pillars with lotus-design bases, is made of large blocks of granite.
Carved during the middle of the 8th century during the reign of the Silla King Kyongdok, Seokguram Grotto's grandeur is definitely related to the increased spreading of Buddhism as a ruling ideology.
