Separatism   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-08-07)
Separatism refers to the advocacy of separation or secession by a group or people of a particular subunit or section from a larger political unit to which it belongs.
There were, however, isolated advocates of the doctrine of separatism, eg, the journalist Jules-Paul TARDIVEL, and occasional flirtations with it in the early 1920s and mid-1930s by strong nationalists such as Abbé Lionel GROULX and his followers.
Popular support for separatism in Québec and for the organizations that represented it rapidly increased in the province in the late 1960s and the 1970s, particularly after the Parti Québécois was formed in 1968.

White separatism is the belief that those who are of white or Caucasian race should have separate institutions or even separate societies, territories, governments, and should not intermarry or have children with those considered to be of non-white races.

This is an androcentric interpretation of women’s separatism.
Radical feminist separatism is a choice to pare away the false selves layered upon women’s selfhood by patriarchy and to undertake telic centering, the purposive focusing which facilitates women’s metamorphosis.
Separatism is not to be understood as "escape from" -- separatism is a move toward personal integrity.

Separatism versus Supremacism   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-08-07)
Under separatism, all races get an equal chance to create the forms of life that express their distinct biological and spiritual natures, free from the interference of other races.
Separatism often appeals to egalitarian sentiments by adopting the pretense that the separatist does not hold that some races are better than others, only that they are different, and all equally entitled to control over their own destinies.
Separatism appeals to the ecologically-minded, because it recognizes that conflict is inevitable when different subspecies are forced to occupy the same ecological niche, and the only way to terminate such conflict is separation for both parties or extinction for one of them -- through miscegenation or outright extermination.

It is important to emphasize that the separatism we are advocating is the polar opposite of segregation, under which Blacks were completely dependent on Whites.
The foregoing discussion of separatism may sound farfetched to many, but nevertheless, if it is given a fair hearing through the media, and if voters have a chance to elect capable and committed leaders to bring it about, it could be done.

EM Volume 4 Issue 3 - The Woman Rebel: Separatism: Are We Limiting Ourselves?"By Hannah Austin
More worrying than this is the continuing presence of separatist attitudes amongst some feminists – discriminatory attitudes towards even the most feminist of men, exclusionary tactics to keep feminism a women-only movement and a refusal to accept that all men are not the enemy.
Separatism adds to this problem; even if it were desirable, it is highly impractical for most women to live completely separated from men.
Even as an abstract theory separatism has many faults; as a way of living it is near impossible to adhere to and undesirable to the vast majority.

In this context, the term "separatism" refers to the process by which a minority group chooses to break away from a larger group.
At the same time, "separatism" may be used to describe how members of a group (no matter how marginal) prevent those designated as "outsiders" from joining it.

Even as a myth, national sovereignty fails to inspire these whose political values are inclusive and who regard ethnicity as an accident of birth instead of a basis for pride.
Every contemporary separatist movement is based on a sense of grievance on the part of an ethnic group (whose members may refer to it as "a nation" or "a people").
Numerous studies have sought to explain nationalism or "identity politics." It may be useful for a reader to approach this collection of cases with a checklist that identifies some of the possible causes and consequences of nationalistic separatism.

American Ecumenism: Separatism, Separation and Schism
Separatism did not necessarily violate Paul’s ideal of unity in Christ.
The effect is the same as with separatism in the voluntary churches of dissenters: there is to be no sword-enforced, legally coerced unity in the Body of Christ where there is this differentiation that most citizens welcome.
The result of separatism and separation has been the proliferation of Paul-ist, Cephas-ite, Apollo-nian denominations that in their prosperity (contrast Europe’s dying establishment churches) suggest the values of capitalist competitive models for church life -- even if they seem to contradict the drive toward Christian unity.

WorldNetDaily: Study: Colleges encourage racial separatism
Colleges and universities around the country foster racial separatism under the guise of "cultural diversity," according to a new study released by a civil-rights group.
Researchers examined the bulletins, course catalogs, publications and websites of the colleges and universities "to ascertain the ways [the schools] spoke of (and treated) minority students, and how they described their own programs and services geared for students of color," said the group in a statement.
"Separatism in all its forms, but especially when it is aided and abetted by college and university officials and resources, is a betrayal to the purposes of higher education," said Meyers.

Alberta separatism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Alberta separatism advocates the secession of province of Alberta from Canada either by forming an independent nation, creating a new federation with one or more of Canada's other four westernmost provinces, or joining the United States.
Alberta separatism arises from the belief held by some that Alberta is culturally distinct from the rest of Canada, and particularly from Eastern Canada, and from the belief that Alberta is harmed economically by providing financial support to other provinces through the federal transfer payment program.
Despite these events, Alberta separatism is still considered by many Albertans (including most of the political establishment) to be the domain of fringe groups.

Part of the rebirth of the PQ can be explained by the federal government’s failure to devise a policy to address the issue of separatism in the right way.

Muslims: integration or separatism?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-08-07)
The choice facing Muslims settling in Europe was between integration with their hosts, or separatism; between accepting the new nationality of their choice or establishing themselves apart in countries which had recently colonized them—a reverse col- onization, in short.
Their position became uncomfortable as all manner of crises were manipulated to promote separatism at the expense of integration.
Just as Muslims in Europe are in the process of deciding between integration and separatism, so Europeans have to decide whether or not their historic identities fashioned their independence and if so, whether it is wise to abandon them.

Support for Western separatism rose once again under the Liberal majority government of 1993 to 2006, especially after it was discovered that the party had been accused of corruption and fraud.
When the party narrowly defeated the newly unified Conservative Party of Canada in the 2004 general election, popular support for separation was estimated to be as high as 40 per cent.

He makes up for his scarcity of introductory verbiage by closely examining separatism in ten chapters that begin with the Liberalism in Britain and the Home Rule Movement in Ireland (1867-1900).
His chapters are divided into smaller segments covering specific topics like "The Policies of Prime Minister Gladstone," "The Founding of the Irish Parliamentary Party" and "The Founding of the Fenians." Significant persons are also given their own sections as mini-biographies that help place personalities to the names.
The second chapter follows suit in form and explores the various "flavors" of separatism in Ireland from 1890 to 1911, including the Literary Revival, the Gaelic League and Sinn-Fein.
