Sepedi is one of the main dialects on which the Bantu Northern Sotho language is based.
The language Sepedi, as commonly used in the Northern part of South Africa, belongs to the Sotho Language group, together with Southern Sotho (seshweshwe) and Setswana.
It may be argued that this language group - constituted by Sepedi, Sestwana, and Seshweshwe(Southeren Sotho) - cannot be refferred to as the Sotho group since that would be to suggest that Tswana or Setswana has no independent existence from the two.

In the development of Sepedi as a written language a clear distinction must be drawn between the period before October 1929 and the period thereafter.
In 1972 a revised Sepedi orthography was published, and the main task of the Sepedi Language Committee thereafter was to concentrate on spelling.
That was also the duty of the Sepedi Language Board which was to take the place of the Sepedi Language Committee during the seventies.

African Languages - Sesotho sa Leboa (Northern Sotho)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-19)
There is a fairly large amount of mutual intelligibility between all three; a speaker of one of the three languages is usually able to understand most of what a speaker of one of the others is saying.
Historically, what is now the official language has been based primarily on Sepedi, as the missionaries who developed the orthography mainly had contact with the Bapedi.
The name "Sepedi" thus came to be regarded, somewhat incorrectly, as being synonymous with "Sesotho sa Leboa", and further confusion arose when the constitution cited "Sepedi" as being the official language.
