Flies in the Sepsidae are in several regards remarkable: (1) They include several species from different genera which are the only known holometabolan insects with a peculiar kind of precopulatory guarding: The guarding male copulates with the female after oviposition instead of prior to egg-laying as in conven-tional precopulatory guarding.

 Sepsidae -- a/o cat.
The wide distributions observed in many Australasian/Oceanian species are typical for the family as a whole and reflect the coprophagous habit of most Sepsidae.
Adult flies are found mostly on animal and human excrement (less often on other rotting organic matter) where eggs are laid and larvae develop, and on nearby vegetation, carrion, fermenting tree sap, and shrubs and herbs.
Many Sepsidae apparently play an important biological role as decomposers of animal excrement.

Larvae of Sepsidae feed in dung and other decaying materials.
Sepsidae are small to medium sized flies, usually dark metallic in colour but rarely dull fl or brownish to yellowish.
The wings are long and clear, often with a dark spot near the tip.

(Tylenchida: Allantonematidae), a parasite of coprphilous flies of the genus Sepsis (Diptera: Sepsidae), 5-8.
is described from coprophilous flies of the family Sepsidae (Sepsis punctum and Sepsis sp.).
This species can be distinguished from those in the related genus Contortylenchus by its ventrally curved female body, prominent cuticularization of the excretory pore and the duct in invasive females, and by the absence of bursa and a gubernaculum in free-living males.

The phylogenetic relationships of Themira (Sepsidae: Diptera) and the evolution of sexual dimorphism
The data set will also be used as a base for more extensive work on the phylogenetic relationships of the Sepsidae for which there is already a phylogenetic hypothesis based on morphological data from the egg-, larval-, and adult morphology.
The work will also shed light on the usefulness of COI for distinguishing closely related species in Diptera.
