		Between 05 September and 09 September 1914, a series of battles were fought in the area between Paris and Verdun in northeastern France that were collectively known as the Battle of The Marne.
		On September 5, Adams concluded a letter to British Foreign Secretary Lord Russell with the words: "It would be superfluous in me to point out to your Lordship that this is war." Adams became a hero in the United States, but the British government had already made the decision to hold the ships in England.
		Reported in Nature of 05 September 2002 (hence the arbitrary date given here; the year is with thousands of years of margin of error, and the name is my invention, no information is given from which could be deduced whether Renée would be more appropriate).

		So there I was in the September sunshine standing by the side of the highway with a car that wouldn't start wondering how I would get the faxes taken care of.
		Two policemen walked up, being on the beat that has them walking that section of the freeway to help stranded motorists, and we had one of the all too common conversations about how one of them wanted to emigrate to Canada.
		This comes in September and October just as the mango harvest is winding down, which is a good thing since they are both very labour intensive harvests.

	Kvetch: Anxiety => September 05 IBs
		I felt left out, since September is (mostly) in the summer - although somebody helpfully pointed out to me today that I should have Burgundy bridesmaid dresses since I'm getting married in the fall.
		So, here's the September 05 thread for all you IBs who were feeling left out.
		A bunch of us in the Fall thread are getting married in September (Sept 4 for me, in fact.) We had discussed the option of splitting since the thread is massive but we are way too attached to the October girls.

	Making Light: Dang! Somebody went and actually read the book!
		People seem to forget that the alliance of evangelicals and political conservatives is of recent vintage, and that when they were involved at all in the past, evangelical clergy were just as likely (if not a little more likely) to be politically liberal as conservative.
		It's only one report, and it's not time to vote yet, but I was a little disappointed to hear that this rare summoning of courage was met by the usual reaction from those who buy into the "help the rich" rhetoric that comes from DC these days.
		Seperation of church and state doesn't apply to individual people's motivations, or a discussion of the practice of religion among a religion's adherents; so long as the law isn't testing for religion or advantaging one religion over another, that separation is being maintained.

		Delta Vel writes "First discovered by a Japanese amateur astronomer on July 31, this Type II supernova was imaged by Hubble on August 17th.
		Some scientists think that there is no life in the universe because supernova are such large events in galaxies that as life gets started somewhere it probably gets wiped out by a nearby star going supernova.
		There was an interesting article on spacedaily.com (The case against Hubble) [spacedaily.com] which proposes that 2 new cheaper modern telescopes could be built for the price of "repairing" hubble..

		I and most of the goths I have known have always been pretty sedentary people (none of us were on the high school football team or any of that), and, while a horse stepped on my foot and broke my toe once, I personally haven't had any particularly serious injuries.
		I am disabled and have used a wheelchair for 4 years, but became a goth 16 years ago, when I was a fit and "healthy" teenager.
		I guess that maybe goths don't become so after an accident, but injured people may be more comfortable in an accepting enviroment where being imperfect isn't such a bad thing, and may even be celebrated.

	Slashdot \| Electronic Voting: The Other Side of the Story
		They knew that opposing interests and herd behavior were dangerous things and devised a three part government that allowed things to go slowly enough and within sight of all (for the most part) as checks and balances to loosing our freedoms (current government take note).
		In spain, elections are in sundays and for every urn 3 citizens are selected to be there, checking who votes and after the urns close to COUNT (and recount) on site the votes, write and phone the results obtained.
		It's going to be interesting to see in the next 5 or 10 years if the USA turns into a totalitarian dictatorship or if the people start civil war, or if the issues are going to be solved peacefully.

		I use Junkbuster and it works well enough, but it has a basic flaw: It relies on a handmade-fllist of banner servers, i.e., you find a banner advertisement source, and it is added to the regular expression list which constitutes the mechanism which recognizes ads and filters them.

		There was a whiteboard that still had a project status for porting various well-known arcade games to Apple, C64, etc. Very melancholy [umd.edu].
		I had a job interview there in 1998 - they were known as "Atari Games," which I think was to distinguish them from "Atari," which was the part of the company that had more to do with the original console hardware (and the Jaguar?) and had spun them off at some time.
		The exhibit is being hosted in the Texas Culture Museum, which is a pretty cool place that was originally built for the 1968 Hemisfair.

		Only that the Weitz brothers want to write the script themselves, which is very good news in that I have great trust in, and admiration for,them.
		I really have to tell u about the Swedish translations of the books about Elric and Co are said by many of my friends to be inadequate (I read the english versions myself).
