 | | A group of cardiologists and rheumatologists gathered to establish what the state of the art is, what the state of the practice is, and more important, what can be done about this from an applied point of view and in terms of research opportunities from a basic science point of view. |
 | | The overlap between the two disciplines is revealed by recent epidemiologic studies showing that low bone mineral density, the hallmark of osteoporosis, is associated with increased cardiovascular mortality; and statin, which lowers serum cholesterol, may increase bone formation, at least in rodents. |
 | | The meeting was called in light of new findings that (1) bisphosphonates, which inhibit bone resorption and are widely used for osteoporosis, are reported to show marked success in the treatment of children with osteogenesis imperfecta, and (2) stromal cell transplants are being suggested as an eventual cure for the disease. |
