Septentrional - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Septentrional is a rarely used word that means "of the north".
The term septentrional, actually the adjectival form of the noun septentrion, itself refers to the seven stars of the Big Dipper asterism (aka "Septentrion").
"Septentrional" is a more or less interchangeable term with "boreal." Ursa Major, the constellation containing the Big Dipper or Plough, dominates the skies of the North.

Several generations of sand blows and sand dikes, indicative of significant and recurrent liquefaction, are preserved in the late Holocene alluvial deposits of the Cibao Valley in northern Dominican Republic.
The Cibao Valley is structurally controlled by the Septentrional fault, an onshore section of the North American–Caribbean strike-slip plate boundary.
The Septentrional fault was previously studied in the central part of the valley, where it sinistrally offsets Holocene terrace risers and soil horizons.

The Septentrional or Northern dialects in turn are divided into two main groups: the largest of these geographically is the Gallo-Italic group, encompassing the regions of Liguria, Piedmont, Lombardy, and Emilia-Romagna, as well as parts of Trentino-Alto Adige.
It is named for the Gauls which once inhabited this part of Italy, and who, it seems, left traces of their Celtic speech in the modern dialects.
The dialect of Milan, or Milanese, is classified as a Septentrional dialect, specifically in the Gallo-Italic sub-group.

CARIBBEAN QUAKE AND TSUNAMI RISKS—Woods Hole geologists Uri ten Brink and Jian Lin reported a heightened earthquake risk from the Septentrional fault zone, which cuts through the highly populated region of the Cibao valley in the Dominican Republic.
The possibility of earthquakes of magnitude 7.5 and higher in the offshore Puerto Rico and Hispaniola trenches pose additional risk to the region.
The two scientists studied historical earthquake data and the geology of the northern Caribbean plate boundary, and then used three-dimensional models to calculate the stress changes in and near the trenches after each earthquake.

Major Caribbean earthquakes and tsunamis a real risk
The island of Hispaniola faces a double risk: an earthquake from the Septentrional fault on the island itself as the plates move past each other, and an earthquake deep in the earth in the subduction zone on which the island sits.
Both could cause severe damage and loss of life, although the researchers say an earthquake in the subduction zone could be more devastating and has the potential to cause a tsunami.
Since the fault is in a highly populated region and is capable of generating magnitude 7.7-7.9 earthquakes, the public should be educated about the risk of this earthquake prone area.
