 | | The term ‘arthritis’ is actually used to describe a group of distinct diseases, primarily affecting joints of the body, all having related symptoms. These may include pain, swelling, and stiffness of the joints and surrounding areas. The word ‘arthritis’ means, literally, “swelling of the joint.” |
 | | Septic arthritis is an infection in the synovial fluid or tissues of a joint. Synovial fluid enables joints in the body to move without friction. In children, the infection is most common in the knee, hip, and ankle. In children under age two, the hip is most commonly affected. |
 | | If treatment starts within 4 days of the infection, the outcome is very good and few problems should develop. If treatment is started later, there may be a chance for later arthritis, destruction of the joint surface, and limited movement in the joint. |
