Vehement Virtuosity or Solitary Introspection - Eclectica Magazine — Jul/Aug 2004
Because each of the 14 Sequenzas features a different solo instrument, and because they were written across almost 40 years for specific performers, the previous recordings that I know of have typically been on discs that feature a soloist in collections of works for his or her instrument.
The oboe Sequenza to me marks Berio's encounter (maybe not the first) with the musical explorations of his older, but in the 60s, still obscure Italian contemporary, Scelsi; for like Scelsi, the work exploits the timbres possible from repetitions of the same pitch.
This Sequenza, like the one for oboe, also explores pitch and timbre; so in some ways, it seems to be a summing up of much that went before.

Sequenza VII   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
The conclusion I came to was that Sequenza VII's rhythmic system did not work for me. That is, I was not able to understand the rhythms in a performable sense...feel them, if you will, certainly not with accuracy.
The Sequenzas of Berio should be approached with the understanding that the virtuoso, the interpreter, has a great deal of latitude.
A performance of Sequenza VII should express the form and rhythm of the piece, the "strict"/"spatial" materials, and then the unique personality of the oboist.

Luciano Berio - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The first, Sequenza I came in 1958 and is for flute; the last, Sequenza XIV (2002) is for cello.
Chemins II (1967), for instance, takes the original Sequenza II (1963) for harp and adapts it for solo viola and nine other instruments.
Among Berio's other compositions are Circles (1960), Sequenza III (1966), and Recital I (for Cathy) (1972), all written for Berberian, and a number of stage works, with Un re in ascolto, a collaboration with Italo Calvino, the best known.

While the piano trio literature forms the core of Sequenza's repertory, the ensemble is a flexible one that also offers a wide range of chamber music literature in various instrumental combinations, for both larger and smaller groups.
Sequenza was invited to perform a special marathon program entitled "The Evolution of the Piano Trio" for the International Felicja Blumental Festival in Tel Aviv.
Sequenza was established in 2001, and was built on the foundations of the renowned Golub-Kaplan-Carr Trio, recognized internationally as one of the foremost ensembles of its kind for almost two decades.

Important Note about Sequenza VII timings   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
What is important is for the performer to realize the PROPORTIONS of Sequenza VII, both small-scale and large-scale.
Whether a particular performance is on the fast side or on the slow side, the large proportions of the work's form should be reflected.
These contrasts of character and intensity should appear throughout Sequenza VII, reflecting the two contrasting rhythm styles ("free" and "strict") that Berio wrote in the original.

The constancy of these 13 works is evidenced by two of the harmonically richest performances, Benny Sluchin's Sequenza V for trombone (1965, originally composed for Stuart Dempster) and Eliot Fisk's Sequenza XI for guitar (1987-88).
Written between 1958 and 1995, the Sequenzas are a kind of encyclopedia of 20th Century instrumental writing; Berio uses every kind of extended technique imaginable to produce a wide range of colors and textures.
The Sequenzas for violin and viola in particular dispell the notion that the most natural thing for them is to imitate the voice.

Grock, the clown & Luciano Berio's Sequenza V
In Sequenza V for trombone solo, the memory of Grock, the last big clown, peeps out.
Grock was my neighbor at Oneglia: he dwelt in an odd and complex country house in the hills, in a sort of oriental garden with small pagodas, small lakes, bridges, streams and weeping-willows.
Sequenza V is a tribute to that ``warum'' in English: why.

Luciano Berio - The Complete Sequenzas and Works for Solo Instruments
One is a kind of self-consciousness about the act of creating music in the specific language of a given instrument, often with reference to specifics of the instrument's history and performance.
Berio's concept of the term "sequenza" was that each piece would derive from a sequence of harmonic fields, a derivation that can clearly be heard.
The Sequenzas reveal unthinkably new timbres, codify new instrumental techniques, and push performers to terrifying heights (as well as speeds) of virtuosity.

Guitarist Eliot Fisk of the New England Conservatory faculty performed Luciano Berio’s Sequenza XI in NEC’s Jordan Hall last fall.
This is one of more than a dozen works Berio has written under the “Sequenza” title, mostly for solo instruments, beginning in 1957.
Sequenza XI was written in 1988 for Fisk to premiere; his performance of the work is included on a Deutsche Grammophon recording of Sequenzas Nos.

Perhaps the most historically-minded member of that group, some of his greatest compositions are postmodern collages and recontextualizations of older works (including Mahler's 2nd Symphony in Sinfonia and Schubert's Unfinished Symphony in Rendering).
We remember Berio through performances of his kinetic Sequenzas for flute and trombone, but especially through new refashionings of his works; the composer's interpretations of music history become the inspiration for transformations of his own compositions.

Suggestions for the Performance of Berio's Sequenza VII
Sequenza VII, by Luciano Berio, is one of the most important works in contemporary oboe literature.
It is helpful to imagine the 1.5" bar as a 3/8 measure, the two 1.3" bars as approximately one 5/8 measure, etc. Berio uses Sequenza VII as the basis of Chemins IV.
Absolute adherence to Berio's time indications would result in a piece that is just under seven minutes long, but the two recordings I have of Holliger playing are eight minutes, ten seconds and eight minutes, thirty-two seconds.
