Sequoia National Forest, the southernmost forest in the range, is home to half of the unprotected giant sequoias on earth.
In the north there are mixed-conifer forests of sugar pines, Douglas fir and incense cedar; on the eastern scarp Jeffrey pines and red fir are found; and in the south there are giant sequoias and ponderosa pine.
The General Sherman Tree found in Sequoia National Park -- 275 feet tall, 1,385 tons in weight and with a 103-foot circumference at the ground -- may be the largest living thing on earth; it is estimated to be 2,500 years old.

The Sequoia National Forest is located along the southern end of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range, northeast of Bakersfield.
In 2000, President Clinton signed a Presidential Proclamation designating 327,769 acres of the Sequoia National Forest as the Giant Sequoia National Monument.
These Giant Sequoia trees (Sequoiadendron giganteum) are closely related to the large redwood trees (Sequoia sempervirens) located along the coast in northern California.
