Sequoiadendron giganteum, BIG TREE, GIANT SEQUOIA
Since the big tree is sometimes referred to as Sequoia gigantea and sometimes as Sequoiadendron giganteum, a humble gardener may wonder why it is that common names are often decried as ambiguous, or conversely as nonunique, whereas botanical names are not.
With the passage of time Sequoiadendron has become the usage of choice among botanists, though in gardening books the term giant sequoia may still be seen.
Big trees may not be as tall as coast redwoods but, with their greatly larger girths, may contain twice the weight of wood, around 1300 tons.

 Sequoiadendron giganteum description
Unfortunately, Sequoia gigantea was an invalid name, having been previously used by Endlicher to describe a horticultural variety of the coast redwood, and this problem was not satisfactorily resolved until the American John T. Buchholz described Sequoiadendron in 1939.
Buccholz' name was not a popular choice, and was widely criticized by the old guard of California botanists, but his arguments--based on substantial differences in the development of Sequoia and Sequoiadendron seed cones--have subsequently won general acceptance (2).

I agree, this does not look like sequoiadendron in that the foliage is not dense, or "heavy" enough--there is too much "elongation." But the general foliage type is like sequoiadendron.
My question about the hardiness of the more "blue" cultivars of sequoiadendron was not connected with my question about Hazal Smith.
I conclude that Hazal Smith is not a name of a currently accepted cultivar--it may just be the name of the tree that Dennis described in NJ and the tree in the USNA tree is a clone or offspring.
