Oklahoma's recorded history began in 1541 when Spanish explorer Coronado ventured through the area on his quest for the "Lost City of Gold." The land that would eventually be known as Oklahoma was part of the 1803 Louisiana Purchase.
The governor of Oklahoma is Brad Henry; the lieutenant governor is Mary Fallin.
Oklahoma is bordered by six states: Texas to the south and west, Arkansas and Missouri to the east, Kansas to the north and Colorado and New Mexico at the tip of the northwestern Oklahoma panhandle.

Sequoyah's mother is known to have had a trading house after the birth of her son and it may have been that her husband was killed while on a trip to get trade goods.
Sequoyah's trading house became a sort of general meeting place for all of the members of the tribe who lived in that section of the country, and it seems certain that he was looked upon as a leader.
Sequoyah was not able to induce the Cherokees in the village to return with him, and on account of his age and weakness was unable to return immediately.

He was raised by his mother as part of the Cherokee community, with no knowledge of the English language, and he became a hunter and fur trader.
Sequoyah fell ill and died in 1843 while searching for a band of Cherokees who, by tradition, had moved into Mexico before the revolution.

Excavations at the site were undertaken in the 1950's when farming exposed burials and again in the 1960's as part of the salvage of archaeological sites in the impoundment area of the Robert S. Kerr Lock and Dam.
Eastern Oklahoma was home to people as far back as 9,500 years ago (see the Packard site in Mayes County).
This material was favored by the Horton people for use as hoes and the small siltstone flakes probably occurred as gardeners stopped their labors to resharpen their hoes..
