Seram (formerly Ceram, also called Seran or Serang) is an island in the Maluku province of Indonesia.
Seram is traversed by a central mountain range, the highest point of which is covered with dense rain forests.
In the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, Seram was generally within the sphere of influence of Ternate, although it was often ruled more directly by the Ternaten vassal state of Buru.

Seram is one of the most distinctive islands in the Indonesian island chain known as the Moluccas.
At the center of Seram is a cluster of mountain ranges, with several peaks reaching more than 3,280 feet (1,000 m).
Five bird species on Seram are considered threatened: the Moluccan scrubfowl, fl-chinned monarch, salmon-crested cockatoo, purple-naped lory, and lazuli kingfisher.

This ecoregion represents the semi-evergreen and moist forests of Seram and associated islands in the easternmost section of the Indonesian Archipelago.
Seram is part remnant crustal fragment, probably from the Australian continent, and part of the volcanic Inner Banda Arc.
Seram, the larger island to the east of Buru, was also delineated as an ecoregion: Seram Rain Forests [AA0118].

On Seram there is a wide variety of combinations of technique, ranging from mainly hunting and gathering with little cultivation (Huaulu, Maneo), through classic forms of swidden agriculture [Ellen, 1978], to more intensive forms of permanent agriculture on the coast.
On Seram, timber extraction has been perceived by some locals as having beneficial effects: discarded sawn timber and log ends are used as fuel and in manufacturing, lumber camp debris and leftover facilities provide a range of materials, while trackways serve to enhance hunting and communication [Ellen, 1985; Ellen, 1993b: 133].
Seram did not effectively feature in the transmigration programme until the second half of the seventies (see above), with the arrival of 400 families in the Kairatu area.

We arrive at Seram, greeted first by a large leatherback turtle heading out of the bay as we approach.
The waters around this north side of Seram are not as spectacular as the forest.

Our only destination on Seram was Sawai Bay, on the north central coast, and we were only able to stay there for three days.
A few weeks would have been nice – as there are a lot of things to see and do in the area (both water and jungle-related), and it’s another one of those quiet lazy places ideal for doing nothing at all if that’s what you feel like.
The trip itself is spectacular, passing limestone cliffs, towering green jungled mountains, and tiny fishing villages on its way to the village of Sawai, set in a narrower bay formed by a peninsula jutting northwards from the south coast of the larger Sawai Bay (Teluk Sawai).

The idea of traveling to Seram was not a recent pipe dream for me. Almost 20 years ago I happened upon a 100-year-old conchological collection that contained many exotic shells from around the world, including one very unusual, walnut-size land shell wrapped in a slip of paper with the locality "Ceram" scribbled across it.
Seram can only be reached aboard a 100-passenger twin-engine speed boat, or by a slower ferry via Ambon, the capital of the Maluku province.
Flying over Seram en route to Ambon earlier in the week, we saw a rugged, mountainous island, deeply cut with fog-shrouded valleys, and blanketed with a thick, foreboding, almost impenetrable jungle.

AMBON, Maluku (JP): Communal clashes broke out in the village of Alang Asa Ude on Seram island, in the early hours of Saturday, leaving one army personnel dead, a local resident injured and at least 20 makeshift houses burned.
The rioters, suspected to have come from a nearby island, came to the village when the residents of Alang Asa Ude were asleep.
According to Syamsul, his 20-personnel-strong troop were involved in a 15-minute-long gunfight with the rioters in order to drive them out of the village.

Since the mid nineteen-eighties Nuaulu swidden cultivators and sago extractors living on the edge of lowland rainforest1 in central Seram, Maluku, have become increasing active in countering threats to their traditional resource base.
My own work, supported by recent botanical research, suggests that it is no less true for the forests of Seram, which have long been a focus of subsistence extraction, and where human agency has had decisive consequences for ecology.
Historically, we know gardening on Seram to be very underdeveloped, and even at the present time gardens are relatively unimportant in many areas, while in describing Nuaulu subsistence the distinction between `gathering' and `cultivation' is very fuzzy [Ellen 1988a: 117, 119, 123, 126-7].
