Serbian princes were well known in the 15th century for supporting manuscripts employing scribes and artists to create manuscripts.
Traditional Serbian art was beginning to show some Baroque influences at the end of the 18th century as shown in the works of Nikola Nesković, Teodor Kračun and Jakov Orfelin.
Serbian art was split between those basing their works on the traditions of Serbian work such as frescoes and iconography and those exploring international styles.

The earliest research of modern Serbian art emphasized that the iconography of Bodjani was done by a painter with an imagination and temperament which was inclined toward the new, the personal and the expressive.
In their case as well, it was shown once again that the spirit of a powerful art form, such as the Baroque and the mannerist art of Venice, did not necessarily have to destroy and defeat the artistic heritage of a particular region which had arisen from other spiritual tendencies.
Finally, the infusion of the Baroque into Serbian society in the eighteenth century, the main propagators of which were the Serbian bourgeoisie and church, represents a period of western orientation in Serbian society, in spite of the round- about ways in which that style was accepted into that society.

All of a sudden, the Serbian art scene, which had so far received little international attention due to its peculiar context and the closed system in which it had to function, came into in focus, enabling the rapid realization of several projects presenting Serbian artists in European countries.
After the loss of the context that had such a strong influence on Serbian artists, determining their behavior and work, art that critically addressed the socio-political framework of the authoritarian regime lost its raison d'être.

One of the general conclusions about the Yugoslav art after the Second World War (1), is that it was not affected by the dogma of Socialist Realism as happened in other countries which became single party states soon after 1945.
Another common place in art historiography in Serbia is that during the sixties the first voices of opposition to mainstream cultural activities had been heard.
This text is mostly taking into consideration art events located in Serbia, but given that the capital city was on that territory as well, all of these and other events included artists that were not of Serbian nationality.

The San Francisco Art Commission had approved the $500,000 sculpture, which would have been lit at night and was, according to Simpson, designed to reclaim the area for walkers.
