While the Serbian identity is to some extent linguistic, apart from the Cyrillic alphabet which they use along with Latin alphabet, the language is very similar to the standard Croatian (see Differences in official languages in Serbia, Croatia and Bosnia) and many linguists consider it part of a common Serbo-Croatian language.
The Serbian identity is based on Orthodox Christianity and on the Serbian Orthodox Church, to the extent that some Serb nationalists claim that those who are not its faithful are not Serbs.
Serbian folk attire varies, mostly because of the very diverse geography and climate of the territory inhabited by the Serbs.

The reemergence of the "Serbian national question," forty years after Communist victory and the reintegration of Yugoslavia, however, was less the consequence of an ideological suppression of Serbian particularism, than a largely unintended consequence of early post-war decisions concerning boundaries between federal units.
Serbian over-representation in Party and government structures continued to present a problem even after Rankovic's dismissal and the ideological break with the centralist and "unitarist" policies of the regime.
The relative over-representation of the Serbian diaspora is equally evident from figures on the ethnic distribution of elite positions in Party and government structures in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The American Journal of Russian and Slavic Studies
Far from a dispassionate analysis of Serbian Orthodoxy, as the author insists it is, it remains merely another establishment screed and polemic, albeit under the aegis of dilettante philosophizing and standardized pseudo-academic language.
So, from the Serbian family, to the Serbian “warrior code,” to the role of woman to the role of poetry to the reign of Slobodan Milosevic and so on, vague and hackneyed academic language is used to provide a cover for these institutions that actually says nothing.
Serbian Orthodox Fundamentals is a bad book, written by an uninformed writer desperate to be considered a “scholar” and “theoretician.” If one is looking for a analysis of the history of the Serbian Church or the institutions of the slava, or the zadruga, one will not find it here.

 Diaspora cultures
Diaspora communities represent and maintain a culture different from those of the countries within which they are located, often retaining strong ties with their country and culture of origin (real or perceived) and with other communities of the same origin in order to preserve that culture.
Whilst all diaspora cultures seek to preserve their unique and fundamental culture from potential mutation, assimilation, or conflict, the role of the country and the society of origin, and indeed the role of the country and the society of actual settlement, is vital and integral to the continued development and existence of the diaspora community.
The increased capacity of diaspora communities to communicate and interact between themselves at all levels, transfer funds, transport goods and raw materials, and transmit ideas between the various components of a diaspora network is considered to be a broadly positive step in the consolidation of diaspora cultures and their relationships with modern society.

Kosovo was considered the cradle of Serbian medieval culture and the symbol of national history and mythology.51 During the first years after the 1981 Albanian demonstrations and the imposition of martial law in Kosovo, the LCY provided the official, socialist interpretation of the disturbances, branding them as instances of "counterrevolution" by Albanian separatists.
One side consisted of extreme nationalist elements in the Serbian Orthodox Church and the Serbian intelligentsia, whose role was to produce propaganda and formulate nationalist ideology.
These nationalist themes, which were perpetuated by the Serbian intelligentsia through the republic's major media outlets, would not have been entirely successful if they had not been taken up by Serbia's political and military elites as part of their daily activity, although they did not publicly express such views.
