Topic: Serbocroatian

In the News (Wed 16 Dec 09)

languagehat.com: Comment on "BOSNIAN" IN NOVI PAZAR.
So, to lump the languages spoken in ex-Yugoslavia as something called Serbocroatian is incorrect and disrespectful to the native speakers.
The term Serbocroatian (and other similar terms: Croatoserbian, Serbo-Croatian, Croato-Serbian, 'Serbian or Croatian', 'Croatian or Serbian') is unacceptable.
Secondly, the term is polyvalent - 'Serbocroatian' connotes a Serb Croatian (Croatian as spoken by Serbs?) and not a Croat Croatian, 'Serbo-Croatian' connotes a part-Serbian and part-Croatian hybrid, while 'Serbian or Croatian' is an either-or term.

Asterix International! --- Asterix in Serbo-Croatian
There are several translations into Serbocroatian, Serbian and Croatian, which are from a linguistical point of view all dialects of one single language - published in former Yugoslavia and its successors.
I'm listing all translations published in former Yugoslavia under Serbocroatian and all more recent editions under Croatian respectively Serbian, depending on the country of publication.
The Serbocroatian editions are mostly written in the Ekavski dialect, but there are also two titles in Ijekavski.

 languagehat.com: LANGUAGES AT LIBRARYTHING.
I thought that "Serbian" was the term for Serbocroatian written using the Cyrillic alphabet, while "Croatian" was the term for Serbocroatian written using the Latin alphabet?
One or two final details re Serbocroatian: In the school context, you can imagine it was cumbersome for student to always pronounce all the syllables (srpskohrvatski), so the common way to do it, in Bosnia at least, consisted in saying: /es-ha/ lessons, from the initial s and h.
Also, again at least in Bosnia, once they taught us the two scripts, we had to write essays every week, alternating the scripts, so one week it was the Latin alphabet and next week the Cyrillic.
