Asa Yoelson (May 26, 1886 - October 23, 1950), better known as Al Jolson, was an immigrant son of a Russian Jew, and was born in Seredzius[?], Lithuania.
Jolson became a popular singer and a superstar of the Broadway stage, radio and film.

The most important--except perhaps for Irving Berlin--of the Eastern European immigrants who inaugurated a long period of Jewish influence in the American entertainment industry, Jolson was born Asa Yoelson in the small Lithuanian town of Seredzius, in 1886 (according to most sources).
Jolson's father was a rabbi, but Jolson and his brother Harry were drawn to secular entertainment, and, in an age when it was still possible to run away and join the theater, they did just that.

A jewishgen ShetlSeeker search yields both Srednik and Seredzius as being a town n/k/a Kriukai, 80.4 miles WNW of Vilnius (46 miles ESE of Taurage/Tauroggen) in Lithuania.

Al Jolson was born as Asa Yoelson in Seredzius, Lithuania on May 26, 1885 and immigrated with his family to the United States.
His father, a Khazn (ceremonial singer) took him to sing at the synagogue, but early escaped form his home to join a circus and the show business life.

The Kaunus Archives had done some splendid research and were able to tell us which village my grandmother had come from, so we then went to Seredzius, a tiny village on the river.
We explored the Old Towns in Vilnius and Kaunus and tried to visualise them at the end of the last century.
