  "Serenity" - Salon
Joss Whedon's feature-film debut, the science-fiction western "Serenity," is beautifully made, written with more wit and intelligence than we get from most contemporary movies of any genre, and features an ensemble of actors whose rhythms are almost supernaturally in tune.
There's only one problem with "Serenity": It's not "Firefly," the TV show that first gave these characters, and this story, life in autumn 2002 on the Fox network.
"Serenity" -- which Whedon wrote as well as directed -- is both a primer on "Firefly" and an extension of it, a picture carefully calibrated to satisfy fans without leaving newcomers stranded.

 IGN: Serenity Review
Serenity, which can accurately be described as a feature film continuation of the cancelled show, is the result.
Serenity is very good science fiction with real heart, which is something that can be neither bought nor meticulously rendered; you either have it or you don't, and any viewer, old or new, can appreciate that.
Serenity's characters are rich and multifaceted, which makes them both more realistic than the sci-fi norm and in turn easier to identify with.

HD DVD Review: Serenity | High-Def Digest
'Serenity' is filled wall-to-wall with scrappy archetypes and recycled pulp fiction plot contrivances we've seen a thousand times before, but to Whedon's great credit, he and his cast are so enthusiastic they transcend them by sheer force of will.
A rough, oftentimes grungy-looking movie, 'Serenity' is not supposed to look totally polished, which means it is not quite ideal home theater demo material.
Highly stylized with a processed veneer, the look of 'Serenity' sometimes varies wildly, with some shots looking almost crystal clear, and others heavily sprinkled with film grain, pumped-up colors and bleached out whites that make it appear as if the film was left out in the sun too long.

 Serenity (2005): Reviews
Serenity is still taut, immersive, and alternately hilarious and heartbreaking, a well-balanced blend of whooping Wild West action and space opera.
Serenity evinces the kind of swashbuckling bonhomie that made so many of us fall in love with the original "Star Wars" films, a love that was mightily tested by George Lucas' humorless prequels.
Serenity may not be the next "Star Wars," but it's the best we've seen since the original trilogy, and if Wheedon is planning Serenity trilogy (the door is left open), it would certainly be welcome.

Locus Online: Gary Westfahl reviews Serenity
Unlike other sci-fi shoot-em-ups, Serenity is distinguished by a well-written script full of memorable lines, and one hastily scribbled statement — "Half of writing history is hiding the truth" — has already been added to my database in case I am ever asked to edit a second, expanded edition of Science Fiction Quotations.
The irony, of course, is that the crew of Serenity must constantly use every weapon at their disposal — guns, grenades, fisticuffs — in order to get that data out, but the point is nonetheless made that, without getting that data out, they would have lost their battle to opponents with a vastly superior arsenal.
Serenity is also a parable about abandoning spontaneity and learning how to plan and to be responsible.

 Filmtracks: Serenity (David Newman)
Serenity: (David Newman) When at first you don't succeed, try, try again, and hopefully the big screen will afford you the success that witless television studio executives failed to allow you in their own venue.
Renamed Serenity, but retaining most of the cast and concepts from the television show, Whedon delves further in the mind-reading, space battle prone universe in which the government/citizen relations are strained much in the same way Orwell might have imagined.
One of the frustrating aspects about Serenity is whether its failure as a score is due to David Newman's own inability to capitalize on the opportunity or Whedon's insistence on an utterly bizarre soundscape for the film.

 danieldrezner.com :: Daniel W. Drezner :: Serenity -- the review
Whedon accomplishes in Serenity what he did so proficiently in his best work on TV -- he creates characters who stay true to their motivations, and then makes you realize that just because an actor is featured in the opening credits, there's no guarantee that they'll still be alive when the end credits run.
Serenity is a nice exercise in demonstrating how special effects should serve the story and not vice versa.

Serenity is a great movie and the ultimate vindication for Joss Whedon and his hand-picked actors who were mismanaged and then dropped mercilessly and far too quickly by Fox.
Most of the crewmembers of Serenity get their moments, but this film comes down to Mal and River, which is what both the television series and the prologue here have set up.

UGO.com Film/TV - Serenity Review - UGO Blasts Off with Serenity
Serenity, the feature film debut from writer-director Joss Whedon (Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Angel), based on his short lived (and completely network neglected) television series, Firefly, has been released, and you don't want to be the only one who hasn't seen this warp-speed space odyssey come Monday morning.
Just a quick recap for those who somehow managed to miss the media frenzy: Serenity, an always-in-need-of-fixing space ship, is home to a group of fast-talking renegade space cowboys and cowgirls, led by a man who fought on the losing side of an intergalactic civil war.
In Serenity, it's no holds barred, no one is safe action, and Whedon is ruthless and calculating (in a good way) in toying with your emotions and making you care deeply about the characters.

Comic Book Resources - CBR News: Finding Serenity in Comics: Matthews Talks "Serenity" Mini-Series
Last year a DVD set of the entire series was released and in September movie goers will once again visit the futuristic world of "Firefly" when the feature film "Serenity," written and directed by Whedon, reprises the entire cast of "Firefly" and blasts its way into theaters.
"Serenity" the comic was written not only for fans of the show "Firefly," but also for fans of character driven science fiction.
The tone of "Serenity" the comic series will be identical to the tone of "Firefly." "It's funny, it's tragic, it's thrilling, it's sexy, it's uplifting and it's depressing-- all at the same time," Matthews explained.

There are, absolutely, some very nice passages but the bulk of the CD's roughly 50 minutes is essentially background music and little of what one would think of as contributing to the emotion of the film.
David Newman's score to Joss Whedon's Serenity does not capture the mood or feel of the movie as Greg Edmondson's did for the television series Firefly.
The music to Firefly was beautiful and poignant, and David Newman actually did a decent job holding on to some of the feeling from the TV soundtrack when he created the score for Serenity.

Though including nine "Firefly" characters plus two new ones (played by Chiwetel Ejiofor and David Krumholtz) was a challenge for Whedon, it wasn't as complex as opening up the action for the big screen, making it fun and accessible to unfamiliar viewers while pleasing the faithful, and doing it all for under $45 million.
In this article, we'll look at the special effects that went into making "Serenity" real, as well as weapons, armor, costumes and characters.
