  Serenity film review
A noisy, messy and sometimes confused spectacle, Serenity is the latest big screen spin-off from a TV series, but the twist this time around is that the TV series in question was cancelled after only eleven episodes.
Set in the future, the film follows the exploits of the crew of Serenity, a battered spaceship that has seen better days, notably in the war against the Alliance forces that the crew lost.
The fanfare of hype certainly doesn't deliver for Serenity, which is unlikely to convert the uninitiated to the original series.

Locus Online: Gary Westfahl reviews Serenity
Pondering what sort of line should conclude his film, the talented Whedon came up with several wonderful possibilities; and while he might be faulted for using every single one of them, one after another, he at least had the wisdom to actually close with the most irreverent one.
But after all, science fiction films that overtly or covertly oppose scientific advancement are hardly a novelty and, in fact, include in their numbers many of the genre's most cherished masterpieces.
With this culminating film, he may have said all that he can say through the medium of this universe, so that film sequels or a return to series television, while still reflecting his considerable talents, would be sterile and repetitive.

Based on the cheers and applause that began as soon as the lights dimmed, the theater was primarily filled with fans of the series who wanted to be the very first to see their beloved show make the leap to the big screen.
The result is SERENITY, a film slated for release in September of 2005 (it was original set for April, but the studio decided that it would face less competition in the fall), written and directed by Whedon.
SERENITY ties more loose ends than I had anticipated (although not all of them that remained from the series), and the film had many surprises and shocks in store.

Much of that is given merely window treatment in the film, leaving a strange beast behind that's different altogether from both the original show, or a completely new sci-fi film franchise familiar to no-one.
The biggest disappointment of the film though is some of the short shrift the characters are given.
In the film however she's useless, reduced to barely any lines and lacking any of the rich depth her character brought to the show.

Serenity is, quite simply, the sci-fi film of the year.
Although it helps if you've seen the TV show, it also stands alone as a film in its own right - and not just one to be enjoyed by the stereotypical sci-fi geek and nerd.

Serenity is remarkable not just as a film, but for the fact that it got to be a film at all.
The crew of Serenity are the bloggers, podcasters, citizen journalists and pirates of their day and speak loudly to those today who aren't evil, just different to the conservative far right norm hailed and embraced by US and Australian governments.
One potential future for Serenity that I haven't mentioned is that Universal may use the film's extremely positive word of mouth to push for a franchise anyway.

UGO.com Film/TV - Serenity Review - UGO Blasts Off with Serenity
Serenity, the feature film debut from writer-director Joss Whedon (Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Angel), based on his short lived (and completely network neglected) television series, Firefly, has been released, and you don't want to be the only one who hasn't seen this warp-speed space odyssey come Monday morning.
Just a quick recap for those who somehow managed to miss the media frenzy: Serenity, an always-in-need-of-fixing space ship, is home to a group of fast-talking renegade space cowboys and cowgirls, led by a man who fought on the losing side of an intergalactic civil war.
In Serenity, it's no holds barred, no one is safe action, and Whedon is ruthless and calculating (in a good way) in toying with your emotions and making you care deeply about the characters.

I hadn't even heard of Firefly (the show on which Serenity is based) till it was cancelled, and it was only due to the film that I decided to have a look.
Serenity does an excellent job of introducing the characters and concepts from the show, while wrapping things up in a self contained plotline requiring no knowledge of previous events.
One small problem I had with the film was that it moves a little too fast, trying to pack a bit too much information into its two hour running time, but that really is a minor gripe.

Because with Serenity, Whedon has delivered a universe as quasi-philosophical as The Matrix, a crew dynamic as soap operatic as Star Trek and a sense of fun and wonder last seen in a galaxy far, far away.
What follows is a suitably epic journey where practically everyone is pushed to their limits and forced to take a good, hard look at themselves.
Most pleasingly, when the film needs to get dark in the second act, it gets really dark, setting up a proper sense of fear that things are not going to end well.

In looking at the selections, I note that roughly 2/3 of the tracks chosen are from the point in the film where things "start happening", essentially continuing sequentially from there to the end.
If my reaction to the film was any indication, the music must have been a powerful tension builder.
But from a released soundtrack standpoint, the tracks chosen for the CD do not stand on their own and the mix of cultures, etc., are much more mishmash than concerto.

Last year a DVD set of the entire series was released and in September movie goers will once again visit the futuristic world of "Firefly" when the feature film "Serenity," written and directed by Whedon, reprises the entire cast of "Firefly" and blasts its way into theaters.
"Serenity" the comic was written not only for fans of the show "Firefly," but also for fans of character driven science fiction.
The tone of "Serenity" the comic series will be identical to the tone of "Firefly." "It's funny, it's tragic, it's thrilling, it's sexy, it's uplifting and it's depressing-- all at the same time," Matthews explained.
