The prayer became widely known when it was adopted by Alcoholics Anonymous; In 1950, the AA Grapevine, an AA magazine, identified Niebuhr as the author and the current AA web site continues to identify Niebuhr as the author.

This is possibly a reaction to another son of his being born with cerebral palsy.
The first song on the Boston hardcore band Blood For Blood's album "Serenity" is a recitation of this prayer, and also where the title of the album comes from.
