Serge Vohor is out as Prime Minister of Vanuatu after most of his coalition - including five ministers - joined the opposition in a 35-14 no confidence vote.
The immediate catalyst for the vote was Vohor's decision to reject the advice of his ministers and establish diplomatic relations with Taiwan, placing China policy at the center of a power struggle between Vohor and the cabinet.

Vohor regretted that the differences of opinions over China and Taiwan did create problems and divisions between the country’s political leaders but he insisted the only reason behind his signing of diplomatic relations with Taiwan was for the best interests of the people of Vanuatu.
