BBC - Radio 3 Awards for World Music 2003 - Sergey Starostin
Sergey Starostin was born in a musical Muscovite family: his father was a good singer while his grandmother introduced him to Russian folk tales and songs.
Sergey's interest in folk tales and folk music kept growing even while he was studying classical music and whenever he travelled around the then Soviet Union he would collect stories, songs and traditional instruments (some of which have changed little since medieval times).
Starostin is not just a gifted musician and musicologist, he actively seeks out and works with musicians who share his passion for exploring the tradition sounds of the tundra.

Altaic languages - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
His suggestion has been taken up and developed by various historical linguists such as Sergei Starostin.
The Altaic theory is claimed by its opponents to mainly be based on typological similarities, such as vowel harmony, lack of grammatical gender, an agglutinative typology, and loanwords.
However, its opponents explain these as loanwords or mutual influence, arguing that, although Turkic, Mongolian, and Tungusic families do have similarities, they are the result of intensive borrowing and long contact among speakers.

The relationship between Hurrian and Subarean has already been mentioned, and the language of the Urartians, who played an important role from the end of the 2nd millennium to the 8th century BC, is likewise closely related to Hurrian.
According to the Soviet scholars Igor M. Diakonov and Sergei A. Starostin, the Eastern Caucasian languages are an offshoot of the Hurrian-Urartian group.
It is not known whether the migrations of the Hurrians ever took the form of aggressive invasion; 18th-century-BC texts from Mari speak of battles with the Hurrian tribe of Turukku south of Lake Urmia (some 150 miles from the Caspian Sea's southwest corner), but these were mountain campaigns, not the warding off of an offensive.

 TheTower of Babel
Such was the consensus--after a heated debate—of the majority of participating scholars who had been quite skeptical of the dating possibilities of glottochronology in the beginning.
Of paramount importance for the use of reconstructed language as a source of information is the dating methods that link the protolanguage to a specific moment in history when it split into several offspring languages.
A major breakthrough in this field of knowledge was achieved in the late 1980s when Sergei Starostin modified to a considerable extent the traditional method of glottochronology and developed a new dating instrument that he called etymostatistics.

 mothertongue
Soviet linguists have uncovered evidence that Basque is related to Na-Dene, and that both languages are part of yet another language macrofamily that includes tongues ranging from Chinese to the ancient Mediterranean tongue Etruscan.
Called Dene-Caucasian, this ancient language was reconstructed in large part by Soviet linguist Sergei Starostin, another student of Dolgopolsky's.
This wide-ranging tongue, spoken on both sides of the Bering Strait and at both ends of the Eurasian land mass, reflects the vast movements of ancient peoples who took their language with them and in some cases, such as Basque, kept it alive despite their being surrounded by other tongues.

Today the Basque region consists of a 30 mile deep section of land stretching a hundred miles from Bayonne in France, across the Pyrenees, to Bilbao in Spain.
Linguists categorize the Basque language as an isolate which has no discernible relationship with any other known language (though the Russian linguist, Sergei Starostin, has proposed a 'macro-family' he calls "Dene-Sino-Caucasian" and attempts to link Basque with Chinese, Sumerian, and Haida, a Native American people and language from southeast Alaska).
Some anthropologists go even further and suggest the Basques might be the direct, lineal descendants of Cro-Magnons from 30,000 or more years ago.
