Taneyev’s chamber music is more Viennese than Russian, and to the extent it is Slavic, it is closer to Dvorˇák, whose own antecedents are in Schubert.
Surely one reason that Taneyev is so neglected is that anyone on the trail of the Viennese lineage would not have sought its continuation in the Russia of this period.
Taneyev’s academic achievements led Tchaikovsky to say that "he is the best counterpoint master of Russia and I am not even sure that there is his equal in the West." Others thought Taneyev’s depth of learning made him more an abstract theoretician than a composer.

Taneyev's style reflects the European, and especially German, orientation of the Moscow Conservatory, rather than the Russian nationalist outlook of the school of Balakirev.
Taneyev wrote a separate concert overture based on some of the opera's major themes, which was conducted by Tchaikovsky in 1889.

With a profound knowledge of musical technique (he wrote a treatise on invertible counterpoint), a dedication to Russian church music, and an allegiance to the Western European romantic style, he was held high in the esteem of his contemporary Russian cognoscenti.
Amongst Taneyev's pupils were the notable pianist/composers Scriabin and Medtner (the latter, like his teacher, also doomed to obscurity, dying forgotten in Golders Green in 1952).
Taneyev's reputation, such as it is, rests on a very small core of compositions.

Rubinstein immediately decided that Taneyev belonged ‘to a number of a very few chosen ones’, declaring that he would grow to be ‘an excellent pianist and a great composer’.
Among Taneyev’s students are such names as Scriabin, Medtner, Gliere and Rachmaninov, as well as the critic Leonid Sabaneyev, the pianist Alexander Goldenweiser – a founder of the Central Music School in Moscow – and many other brilliant musicians.
And, as he did not rely on lessons as a source of income (he received a monthly salary from the Conservatoire), Taneyev was able to handpick his students for their musical abilities.

This training eventually passed into the hands of her brother, Fyodor Karlovich Goedicke, who successfully prepared young Nikolai to enter the Moscow Conservatory.
There, under the influence of its formidable director, Vasily Safonov, Medtner's keyboard technique blossomed to virtuoso levels, but the student just as avidly absorbed the principles of harmony and counterpoint, turning to composition under the guidance of the influential Sergei Taneyev.
From those beginnings, Medtner's balanced but increasingly complicated harmonic language absorbed the mature contrapuntal style of which Taneyev was an incomparable master.

Sergei Taneyev (1856-1915) is one of the greatest Russian composers from the last half of the 19th and early 20th centuries and probably, from this group, the one whose music is the least known in the West.
Taneyev came from an aristocratic family that patronized the arts and when Sergei's talent became apparent, his father sent him to the newly opened Moscow Conservatory at the age of 10.
Although he became a brilliant pianist, Taneyev opted for a career as a composer and teacher and soon became a professor at the Conservatory.
