Highlighting Thursday's session were speeches by United Nations Ambassadors Valeriy Kuchinsky, acting permanent representative of Ukraine; Sergey Lavrov, permanent representative of the Russian Federation; Sergei Ling, permanent representative of the Republic of Belarus; and Madina B. Jarbussynova, permanent representative of the Republic of Kazakstan.
Komisarenko, both spoke of the continuing repercussions of Chornobyl.

Igor Komisarenko’s grandfather was a smith in a small village and had to provide for 12 family members in a country with a food shortage.
Sergiy became a biochemist and has been vice-chairman of the Council of Ministers and the Ukraine’s Ambassador Plenipotentiary to Britain.
It was agreed that Sergiy could take measurements for a group of 100 workers before, during and after they had been in the Chernobyl zone.

Komisarenko's brother was Ukraine's principal surgeon in endocrinology, and before the disaster saw only two or three children a year with cancer.
In Komisarenko's own specialty, immunology, he was able to observe that Soviet soldiers working with the cleanup at so-called low levels of exposure, had by the end of a year's exposure dropped considerably in their natural immunity.
Komisarenko says that Ukraine pays more than $1 billion a year trying to cope with the consequences of this accident, the bulk of it in social security and health care to the people that suffered.

Komisarenko discussed the leading candidates for the upcoming presidential election, and explained President Kuchma’s attempts to introduce constitutional reforms that could influence the election.
Komisarenko stated that there is still a chance that the current Ukrainian president, Leonid Kuchma, may attempt to lengthen his presidential term.
According to Komisarenko, President Kuchma’s original plan was to find a candidate who could guarantee him security and immunity (similar to the Russian case of Yeltsin and Putin).
