Serial Line Internet Protocol - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
On PCs, SLIP has been largely replaced by the Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP), which is better engineered, has more features and does not require its IP address configuration to be set before it is established.
SLIP modifies a standard Internet datagram by appending a special "SLIP END" character to it, which allows datagrams to be distinguished as separate.
For most uses both SLIP and PLIP have been replaced by increasingly-common Ethernet protocol based networking support and cross-cable setups – or other point-to-point connections such as USB laplink cables, used to transfer files to a second computer where a network is not necessary or available.

SLIP, Serial Line IP, is a currently a de facto standard, commonly used for point-to-point serial connections running TCP/IP.
SLIP is commonly used on dedicated serial links and sometimes for dialup purposes, and is usually used with line speeds between 1200bps and 19.2Kbps.
Also, when using SLIP for hosts to dial-up a router, the addressing scheme may be quite dynamic and the router may need to inform the dialing host of Romkey [Page 2] RFC 1055 Serial Line IP June 1988 the host's IP address.

Configuring the Serial Line Internet Protocol (SLIP)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-08-19)
SCO SLIP is an implementation of the Serial Line Internet Protocol (SLIP) as defined in RFC 1055 and RFC 1144.
SLIP can be used to connect one host to another via a single, physical serial line connection between serial ports or over longer distances using a modem at each end of a telephone line.
A computer that is running SLIP over one or more serial lines and that is also connected to a computer network (such as an Ethernet) can serve as a communication gateway between computers on a network and computers at the far end of each serial line.

Datagram Congestion Control Protocol - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Datagram Congestion Control Protocol (DCCP) is a message-oriented transport layer protocol.
Applications that might make use of DCCP include those with timing constraints on the delivery of data such that reliable in-order delivery, when combined with congestion control, is likely to result in some information arriving at the receiver after it is no longer of use.
Congestion control is the way that a network protocol discovers the available network capacity on a particular path.

Chapter 8. 7318 Serial Line Internet Protocol (SLIP) and Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-08-19)
SLIP or PPP allows users logged into either host to have transparent network access to resources on the 7318 or to the other host.
If SLIP is started from the command line on a port, the configuration for the port must have one application set to command and at least one other session set to dynamic.
Once SLIP is started on a port, it will not return to a command session until the port is reinitialized.

SLIP (slip): SLIP is short for Serial Line Internet Protocol and is a data link format for transmitting data between two devices.
SLIP is an older and simpler protocol but is very similar in both form and function to PPP.
This communication protocol allows a computer connected to a server via a serial line (such as a modem) to become an actual node on the Internet.

Serial Line Internet Protocol (SLIP) and Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP)
SLIP and PPP were designed to support dial-up access to networks based on the Internet protocols.
SLIP is a simple protocol that functions at the Physical layer, whereas PPP is a considerably enhanced protocol that provides Physical layer and Data Link layer functionality.

Until then, when a SLIP or PPP connection is dropped, and a quick reconnect is desired, attempt to connect to the same server.

 About SLIP and PPP
A compromise between a direct internet connection and host dial-up access is to use SLIP (Serial Line Internet Protocol) or PPP (Point to Point Protocol).
PPP is a newer protocol, better designed, and more acceptable to the sort of people who like to standardize protocol specifications.
This is often not a concern for most users since their purpose of either using SLIP or PPP is to connect to the internet and the internet uses TCP/IP only.

A SAM is a serial register built into a VRAM to enable it to transfer large quantities of data from the DRAM portion of the device to a graphics controller or frame buffer.
Serial data transfer is defined as transmitting data one bit at a time, in a stream across one line, often, as it may be, a very slow stream.

An IP datagram is passed down to SLIP, which breaks it into bytes and sends them one at a time over the link.
If no noise occurred on the line between datagrams then the recipient will just see the END at the start of datagram #2 right after the one at the end of #1, and will ignore the “null datagram”; between the two.
IP datagrams are passed down to the SLIP software at layer two (a simplified one with only five bytes is shown here).

SLIP (Serial Line Internet Protocol) (Linktionary term)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-08-19)
When one TCP/IP system connects with another TCP/IP system over a serial point-to-point communication line (e.g., a dial-up modem), some way is needed to transport IP packets (a network layer activity) across the serial link (a data link layer activity).
PPP transports other protocols such as DECnet, IPX, and AppleTalk, and supports synchronous transfers, frame error detection, and controls to automatically configure addresses and links.
SLIP is described in RFC 1055 (A Nonstandard for Transmission of IP Datagrams Over Serial Lines: Slip, June 1988).
