Serial Presence Detect - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Serial Presence Detect (SPD) refers to a standardized way to access manufacturer information from a computer memory module.
The JEDEC standards require certain parameters to be placed in the lower 128 bytes of an EEPROM located on the memory module.
These bytes often contain timing parameters, manufacturer, serial number, and other useful information about the module.

Define serial presence detect - a Whatis.com definition - see also: SPD   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
When a computer is booted (started), serial presence detect (SPD) is information stored in an electrically erasable programmable read-only memory (EEPROM) chip on a synchronous dynamic random access memory (SDRAM) memory module that tells the basic input/output system (BIOS) the module's size, data width, speed, and voltage.
Before SPD, memory chips were identified with parallel presence detect (PPD).
PPD used a separate PIN for each bit of information, which meant that only the speed and density of the memory module could be stored because of the limited space for pins.

Serial presence detect replaced the parallel methodology and was standardized by JEDEC (at the request of major system manufacturers).
A serial EEPROM is used to store the presence detect information as well as much more information.
Serial presence detect uses 2 pins (one for data and one for "enable") to detect the presence of modules serially.

PCTechGuide - The PC Technology Guide
For a number of years, Parallel Presence Detect (PPD) was the traditional method of relaying the required information by using a number of resistors.
This led to JEDEC defining a new standard, serial-presence detect (SPD).
The Serial Presence Detect function is implemented using an 8-pin serial EEPROM chip.

Serial Presence Detect (SPD) - An 8-pin serial EEPROM chip available on some SDRAM memory that keeps specific information about a DIMM's size, speed, voltage, drive strength, number of row and column addresses, DIMM manufacturer, and RAM manufacturer.

 SPD Management
The Serial Presence Detect is a small 256 bytes, 8-pin EEPROM chip mounted on a 168-pin DIMM module or a 144-pin SO DIMM module.
SPD are becoming more critical for SDRAM modules as the motherboard interface for SDRAM has more complex set of options.
Once the SPD information is edited, it can be saved by choosing the SAVE AS function from the File menu and saved with a *.SPD extension, or it can be sent to SIMCHECK II's buffer for subsequent programming the SPD of your modules.

 LostCircuits, Tech Advice Guide
In order to standardize the SDRAM interface, the so-called Serial Presence Detect was introduced in 1998 as part of the PC100 specifications hammered out by Intel.
The SPD is a small EEPROM located in the corner of the DIMM's PCB and contains all necessary specifications of the DIMMs including speed of the individual components as CAS and bank cycle time as well as valid settings for the module and the manufacturer's code.
One potential drawback of the SPD is that it is not write protected and, thus, anyone with an EEPROM writer can reprogram it to show data out of specs which suggest better quality than actually present.

The SPD is used on the latest versions of the DIMMs (Dual Inline Memory Modules) that provide most of the system memory in desktop PCs and printers, and in set-top boxes.
The use of Serial Presence Detect memories is mandatory for all new 168-pin and 200-pin DDR2 modules.
The SPD operates within a single supply voltage range of 1.7V to 3.6V, as required by DDR2, and is specified for the 0 to +70 degrees C temperature range.

Serial Presence Detect (or SPD) information is stored inside of a special component on the memory module.

Serial Presence Detect (SPD) data is probably the most misunderstood subject in the memory module industry.

On the serial number setting, JEDEC has no specification on the data format nor dictates the location of Most Significant Bit.

The original scheme, called Parallel Presence Detect (PPD) used a separate pin for each bit of information.
As the number of pins can not be very large this only allowed to identify the density and the speed of the chips.
To allow for additional information the Serial Presence Detect (SPD) scheme was introduced which uses a serial EEPROM to store the presence detect information and requires only two pins (one for enabling it and one for data).

Featuring 2 Kb capacity, Model M34E02 fufills Serial Presence Detect function used in high-speed memory modules conforming to JEDEC DDR2 specification.
Geneva, May 27, 2004 — STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM) has introduced a new application specific EEPROM designed to fulfill the Serial Presence Detect (SPD) function used in the new generation of higher speed memory modules conforming to the JEDEC DDR2 specification.
It follows ST’s existing M34C02 SPD, but as well as the Permanent Software Protection for the lower 128 bytes — which are write protected in response to a specific instruction sequence — a temporary lock/unlock command has been added for the convenience of DRAM module makers.

The speed of the memory chips is only one of several factors in the overall equation.
Other factors include the quality and accuracy of the individual chips, the printed circuit board (PCB), the engineering of the circuitry on the PCB and the presence of an SPD (serial presence detect) device, to name a few.
In addition, SDRAM chips must be used in conjunction with a correctly programmed EEPROM, a serial presence detect device that accurately defines the memory's characteristics, on a properly designed Printed Circuit Board.
