Serial monogamy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Serial monogamy is a form of monogamy in which participants have only one sexual partner at any one time, but have more than one sexual partner in their lifetime.
Serial monogamy could also be seen as serial, but not monogamous.
It is a form of polygamy wherein the multiple spouses are had "in series" (one after the other) rather than "in parallel" (at the same time).

It is not serial polygamy, it is Serial Monogamy -- just like a serial killer (a bad comparison, but useful) kills one person at a time, but over and over, a serial mogamist is married to one person at a time, but over and over.

 Monogamy Myth
The Monogamy Myth is the belief that monogamy is the norm in our society and that it is supported by society as a whole.
Stricter monogamy and private property ownership worked together since the inheritance of the property was decidedly the children of the owner.
According to the Monogamy Myth, society as a whole is supportive of monogamy and of people's efforts to remain monogamous, leading people to expect to have a monogamous marriage.

 The Body: Monogamy
Monogamy technically refers to the marriage of one man and one woman but is also widely used to refer to the practice of restricting sexual behavior to a single partner.
Within the Judeo-Christian tradition, lifelong monogamy between a man and a woman within the bounds of marriage has been regarded as normative, with sexual infidelity described as sin and serving as sufficient rationale for the legal dissolution of the union.
The term "serial monogamy" has been coined to refer to situations in which individuals have a series of consecutive sexual pairings of various duration, such that they have multiple partners over time but never more than one partner at any single point in time.

Monogamy usually requires that animals be able to recognize their mate as an individual, not a particularly easy cognitive task.
Monogamy may evolve when the cost of acquiring mates is very high, when females have the ability to restrict male behavior, or when offspring survival requires more intensive care than can be provided by a single animal.
The major cost of monogamy is that each individual makes their entire reproductive investment dependent on the fitness of their mate.

(At least, serial monogamy seems to be historically what human socities most often - not always - slip into) There are probably underlying biological reasons for this, mostly dealing with resource allocation (which is what I met by a one-to-one pairing).
Monogamy is also arguably better for males, who otherwise have a much more variable rate of reproductive success under other systems.
It's not clear why humans do this -- invent sophistic oxymorons such as "serial monogamy", that is -- since most primates have always been polygamous to one degree or another depending on the species involved.

Quantifying the serial monogamy trend is difficult, because the evidence is impressionistic, says Reginald Bibby, a sociologist at the University of Lethbridge who has surveyed teens extensively.

All except one of the receptive females staggered the timing of their moults at intervals throughout the summer so that each moulted and subsequently mated inside the shelter of a dominant male.

 Serial Monogamy
When two mature male and five mature female lobsters were communally held in large aquaria, the females staggered the timing of their molts at precise intervals throughout the summer to mate with the dominant male.
This suggests that the male protects the female from injury and predation while her shell is soft during postmolt cohabitation.
In the situation with two males and five females, if the first female to mate smelled only male odor when she checked the male shelter entrance, perhaps her molt was thereby accelerated.
