Topic: Sericite

Sericite - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sericite is a fine grained mica, either muscovite, illite, or paragonite.
Sericite is a common alteration mineral of orthoclase or plagioclase feldspars in areas that have been subjected to hydrothermal alteration typically associated with copper, tin, or other hydrothermal ore deposits.
Sericite also occurs as the fine mica that gives the sheen to phyllite and schistose metamorphic rocks.

Olympus Microscopy Resource Center: Polarized Light Microscopy Gallery - Sericite
Sericite typically occurs as aggregates of tiny flakes and exhibits a silky sheen, which it imparts to the rocks that it is found in.
The paragonite sericite is found in similar locations, but was formerly believed to be much less common than the muscovite form.
Many geologists now suppose that many instances of paragonite were mistakenly identified as muscovite because both are light colored micas and a determination between the two cannot usually be made without establishing their potassium to sodium ratios.

Medinah Minerals, Inc. - Vancouver Petrographic 10.6.00 Report
Cores of the pseudomorphs tend to be chlorite and minor sericite; rims tend to be carbonate.
Sericite (and ?clay) altered plagioclase sites have subhedral outlines up to 0.5 cm long that are pseudomorphed by 10-20 micron flakes.
Sericite flakes are rarely up to 35 microns in diameter, mixed in places with a very pale greenish or brownish chlorite of similar size.

Youngest sericitic alteration, consisting of sericite-quartz with 2 to 10 vol % pyrite, formed as well-defined halos on through-going pyritic fractures and pebble breccias with steep Jurassic dips.
The volume of sericitic alteration expands upward from 1-2% of the rock in potassic ore zones at 2-3 km depths to ~50% of exposures at 1 km paleodepth.
Sericitic alteration is pervasive in the upper part of the section in many areas of the Buckskin.

Albite Information Center - albite sericite alteration plot
The composition of plagioclase albite sericite alteration plot feldspar is typically determined by the percentage of anorthite (%An) in system.
The members of this series are known uses of albite as the sodic-lime feldspars, and as a group are called the plagioclase feldspars, which comes from Greek meaning "oblique fracture" in reference to the two not-quite-right-angle cleavages.
Sunstone is mainly oligoclase (sometimes albite) albite sericite tie line with flakes of hematite.

Two generations of arsenopyrite were characterized (UOZ and LOZ): aspy 1 (sulphur-rich, occurring in the center of the grains, with evidence of dissolution) and aspy 2 (arsenic-rich, occurring in the border of the grains, and to which gold is preferably associated).

One of the samples was microprobed to identify a fibrous mineral.
From the shape it appears to have been fibrous sillimanite, but the original mineral has been replaced by sericite (fine grained white mica).
We infer that sericite replaced fibrous sillimanite, and that the sillimanite indicates a metamorphic temperature of 540-570 C. I orientated the sericite and plotted the data on a rose diagram, which showed that there was a strong orientation parallel to the foliation in the quartzite, illustrating a Shape Preferred Orientation.
