Interview with Serj Tankian from System of a Down
Serj: …and we wouldn’t be around if they hadn’t survived; if it wasn’t for the good people in the orphanage that had helped take care of them and nurture them and keep them alive, we wouldn’t be here.
Serj: Yeah, it is a personal issue, I mean, people always talk about us doing political things and we are I mean, to a certain degree a political or socially inclined band in some ways although we do many other things with our art.
Serj: and so they’re coming from a place of their own knowledge which they think is true and then here’s this conference in Turkey goin on trying to reveal the truth of what’s really happened with archives, independent scholars, associations, etc. and they’re pissed off.

As with many perpetual searchers, subject Tankian strolls a path towards tranquility not in and of itself flower-lined or emotionally perfumed.
It's possible subject Tankian may be a "quadjunctionary," psychoanalytically defined as "pertaining to all four orders but possessing a majority of none." Entered as evidence to the above, subject's elusory response when questioned on the nature and bias of System of a Down's curious euphony, specifically: Is their music opti or pessimistic?
CONCLUSION: System of a Down singer Serj Tankian is happily trapped in an evolution towards the capacity for blind trust that intrinsically mandates eternal questioning of self and surroundings.

More recently, Tankian is feeling even more eclectic, exploring his Armenian roots with a new project, called Serart, which sounds almost nothing like System and was put out on Serjical Strike Records, a record label he started in 2001.
Serj Tankian : The goal for the label is to expose original artists and original projects that are not genre specific that may not of otherwise been exposed to commercial culture.
Serj Tankian : The possibility is there, but ultimately it'll depend on whether or not they actually like the music.

Many of you might also know that Serj and his System mates are that rare breed of politically involved, culturally diverse and sonically muscular entertainment professionals.
Serj Tankian: You know, when I first saw him perform I was so compelled and awed by his artistic capability, how he transcended with his voice, the things that he played.
Serj: Well, the "Boom" video was being done at the same time as the Serart DVD, which is an 18-minute visual collage representing sounds from the album, which is based on the 13-minute mix-down heard on the sampler.

About the Wu-Tang cover, Serj jokes, "It's the first time I've ever ended a song with the word 'bee-autch!'" The group is also hitting the road with Metallica and Korn this summer for a big-venue blast that promises to give concert-goers a show well worth paying for, even at Ticketmaster prices.
And if recording, touring, and writing material with his bandmates for their highly anticipated sophomore album weren't enough, Serj is working on his own personal projects with a yet unknown female vocalist and some other musical creations that are - trust me on this one - nothing short of avant-garde.
Despite international documentation which confirms that an estimated 1.5 million Armenian men, women, and children lost their lives in the genocide (not to mention the massacres between the years of 1894-1896), it remains to be seen whether the Turkish government will ever recognize the abominable event or attempt to make reparations.

The album generated four Top 10 singles, including the #1 “Aerials,” and went on to sell 6 million copies, establishing System not as some prefab mainstream commercial entity but rather as an urgent voice in the uncharted wilderness that was heard—and believed—by a great many human beings.
With Steal!, System, which up to that point had pitched nothing but fastballs (although some were of the split-finger variety), showed that it had a command of all kinds of stuff, and potent stuff at that.
I think that’s why my world and Serj’s come together so well lyrically, because he’s more politically motivated and I’m not, but some of his stuff makes mine more serious, and some of my stuff makes his stuff a little bit more human.
