Wulfstan II, Archbishop of York - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
His best known is Sermo Lupi ad Anglos.
In Sermo Lupi ad Anglos (Sermon of the Wolf to the English), he proclaims the depredations of the "Danes" (who were, at that point, primarily Norwegian invaders) a scourge from God to lash the English for their sins.
He calls upon them to repent their sinful ways, and also composes numerous homilies relating to the Last Days and the coming of Antichrist.

Literary Encyclopedia: Wulfstan   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Wulfstan probably wrote the Sermo Lupi in 1014, the year of the traumatic exile of King Æthelred, but he continued to rework it in the succeeding period, i.e.
The Sermo Lupi illustrates strikingly Wulfstan's hallmark style, which is characterized by rhetorical cumulation, based on distinctive alliterating two-stress phrasal units and exploiting rhyme, repetition and other verbal effects.
The two-stress alliterative framework of the prose is adapted from the metrical structure of Old English poetry and is the basis of the distinctly aural quality of Wulfstan's writing.

The one contemporary annal that does survive (for 1001) is certainly less doom-laden than the later chronicle.
Likewise Wulfstan's Sermo Lupi ad Anglos, that great catalogue of things rotten in England, is a reflection of the state of things in 1014, not the whole reign.
The internal politics of Æthelred's reign can be divided into four periods.

Abstract:  Peruggia: “Fire in the Hol-y: Canonical Influences on Wulfstan’s Homilies”   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Through discussion centered on Wulfstan’s Canon Law Collection and his Eschatological homilies, I hope to show that while the laws and homilies serve two very different purposes, Wulfstan ties both genres together seamlessly.
Furthermore, arguably Wulfstan’s most well-known homily, his Sermo Lupi ad Anglos, quando Dani maxime persecuti sunt eos, while technically not an Eschatological construct, shows similar canonical influences.
Thus, in order to show such influence through numerous smaller homilies, I will use the Sermo Lupi as a reference point from which discussion of the Eschatological homilies will derive.

The Norse who attacked Lindisfarne, and took part in the increasing viking activity were actually, it could be claimed, still living in this age.
Moving forward - and returning to the idea of the vikings as a scourge of God used to punish a wicked people, this was actually a view implicit in Wulfstan's "Sermo Lupi ad Anglos" (Sermon of the Wolf to the English).
