Serology - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Such antibodies may be formed against a microorganism, against other foreign proteins (in response, for example, to a mismatched blood transfusion), or to one's own proteins, in instances of autoimmune disease.
Serological tests may be performed for diagnostic purposes when an infection is suspected, in rheumatic illnesses, and in many other situations, such as checking blood type.
Serological techniques include Agglutination (biology), precipitation, complement-fixation and fluorescent antibodies.

We defined "known sources" if it was possible to test serological status of the source patient or had a serologic test done before and "unknown sources" those which was impossible to identify.
HCW previously knew the serological status of the source in 11% cases, 46% if the source was infected and only 6% in negative ones.
HCW knew the serological status of source exposure in a very low number of cases, but the proportion of positive sources was not high.

May 7, 1998 - FDA Microbial Reagent and Medical Devices Exemptions
Some of the serological reagents and in-vitro diagnostic devices placed in Table II are used to detect and diagnose high risk infectious diseases and therefore do meet the reserved criteria under section 206 of the Food and Drug Administration Modernization Act of 1997 and therefore should not be exempt from premarket notification.
In addition, the following in-vitro devices and serological reagents "(f) infer the identity of a microorganism directly from clinical material" or are used "(g) in the detection of antibodies to microorganisms".
These serological reagents are used in keys tests for identifying these viruses in tissue culture, and confirming these infections.

Serological tests are performed at the time of diagnosis of celiac disease and they are repeated later to estimate the efficacy of the gluten-free diet.
It is well known that up to 15% of the family members of a patient with celiac disease may have the asymptomatic (latent or silent) form of celiac disease, although they have positive serological tests and have the pathological changes in the upper part of the small intestine.

As a result, serological analysis of blood samples collected from wild birds (right) can document presence of the disease when mosquito numbers are low and parasites can not be easily found by examination of blood smears.

Characterization of dual HIV-1 and HIV-2 serological profiles by polymerase chain reaction.
METHODS: Dual serological reactivity was determined by double Western blot and two enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays with recombinant proteins and synthetic peptides as antigens.
RESULTS: Both HIV-1 and HIV-2 DNA sequences were detected in four out of 11 samples with a dual serological profile and in four out of 24 samples with anti-HIV-1 antibodies only.
CONCLUSION: These results show that dual HIV-1 and HIV-2 serological profiles are not always due to infection by both viruses, and emphasize the need for a combination of serological and PCR assays for the appraisal of these viral infections.
