Serpentine belt - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A serpentine belt is a single continuous belt used to drive multiple peripheral devices in an automotive engine, such as alternators, power steering pumps, coolant pumps, A/C compressors, etc.
By using a single wider belt instead of multiple thinner belts, the belt may be put under increased tension without stretching.
Serpentine belts are also much easier to maintain and change, since there is no need to remove multiple belts to replace a single broken or worn belt.

If you aren't sure where your belt tensioner is, look around and find the "Belt Routing Diagram" under the hood, it should help point you in the right direction.
This is because at/past the red mark, the belt tensioner is near the end of it's available travel and the manufacturer of your vehicle has deemed it unsafe to go any further without replacement of the serpentine belt.

 Serpentine Belt Replacement
The serpentine belt is responsible for the operation of several engine components.
The belt assists in the proper operation of vital components, such as the water pump (keeps engine at proper running temperature), alternator (recharges the battery), power steering (assists the driver in steering), and air conditioning (provides a comfortable interior climate).
Most manufacturers recommend that the serpentine belt should be replaced every 45,000 to 60,000 miles or if the belt has more than 3 cracks per inch.

A Chevy serpentine belt will typically drive all the accessories including the alternator, water pump, and power steering belt, the belt is flat in design and is typically a half-inch wide.
Chevy serpentine belts come in many different lengths and have a Chevy serpentine belt tensioner that holds a predetermined pressure against the belt using a spring.
To replace a Chevy serpentine belt you will need to make sure you have the tools to take the tension off the Chevy belt tensioner, and are able to easily reroute the belt thru the maize of pulleys.

Serpentine Belt Drive System - Tech Articles - Street Rodder Magazine
There are a number of reasons for this: A single, flat belt is more efficient than several of the V-type; a single, spring-loaded tensioner can be used so the accessories don't have to pivot to tighten the belts, and as a result can be mounted solidly for less vibration; and finally, it's a compact design.
What street rodders need is a serpentine system that provides the same solid foundation present in OEM designs that looks good while its at it, and that's just what Billet Specialties has come up with.
To install the pulley, a wrench is used on the tensioner to overcome spring pressure.
