Reference - Legal Status Of Serrasalmus nattereri - Red Piranha in the USA.
Generally speaking, for all other US states, the keeping of this fish is perfectly legal because the temperature in local waters is too low to for the fish to breed or survive.
Serrasalmus nattereri can vary greatly in colour and juveniles forms differ considerably from the adults therefore positive identification can be difficult.
Serrasalmus nattereri may sometimes labelled as a pacu or incorrectly as another legal species.

It is suspected that (certain?) Serrasalmus species release a certain kind of hormone into the water, thus signalling that the fish is ready to spawn and thus lowering agression levels.

 About Genus Serrasalmus (Linnaeus 1766)
It is based on the oldest species, the type genus Serrasalmus which was formerly the type genus of the family.
A new Serrasalmus species recently discovered in Venezuela is believed to eat plants (Machado, 2003), but at this time, the species remains un-described and unnamed.
The number of species nominated, the difficulty in examining the types, which are spread out among various museums and countries of Europe, America, the loss of type specimens and the lack of good descriptions has been a hindrance for the study.

 piranha behavior
When you first buy your piranha and put them in their new tank, they may act very wild and bash into the tank, or even play dead, dont worry, this is normal for newly bought piranhas.
The best way to determine what specie the fish is, is to figure out what genus it is either Pygocentrus or Serrasalmus which is quite easy to do all you have to look at is the head and whether its concave or convex.
Concave means it is a Serrasalmus and convex means it is a Pygocentrus.
