The bounding prefectures and one district of another state (nation) are Thessaloniki to the southwest, Kilkis to the west, the Former Yugoslav Republic of "Macedonia" (FYROM) with the district of Strumica to the northwest, Bulgaria to the north, Drama to the northeast and the Kavala to the east.
Serres was seized from the Turks by the Bulgarians in the First Balkan War and became a part of Greece at the end of the Second Balkan War.
The prefecture is also a tourist attraction including Lailia, rich in forests, a skiing resort in the central portion, lake Kerkini which is a reservoir supplying water to the farmlands, fishing is common within Ano Poroia especially during the summer months and famous caves near Alistrati.

Serres was one of the few urban centres in the interior of the Ottoman Empire-and certainly the only town in the Macedonian hinterland-in which representatives of foreign countries settled as early as the end of the 18th century.
Serres was the most important economic and educational centre in Macedonia in the 17th and 18th centuries-even more important than Thessaloniki, despite the difference in size between the two towns-and it maintained this position in eastern Macedonia throughout the period under examination.
The subject of this report is education in Serres, the activity of the educational associations, the role of the community and the metropolitans in educational affairs, and the educational policy of the Greek state as articulated by the consul in Serres.
