		Serse has been one of my favorite Handel operas since I first heard the old Priestman LP on Westminster (Maureen Forrester in the title role, Lucia Popp as Romilda).
		Serse may not be a comedy in the modern sense of the word (the term "melodrama" would fit better), but it is nevertheless quite different stylistically from Handel's earlier "heroic" operas.
		Serse is styled as a mixture of recitative and arioso, with the dramatic action spilling over from the recitatives into many of the ariosos and arias - this was an unusual feature by opera seria standards: in opera seria, arias were usually employed to express emotion rather than action.

		In the title role, Paula Rasmussen is impressive, but it is my feeling that the microphones are not kind to her voice, giving it an edge I suspect one doesn't hear in the theater.

		In realtà la comicità di Serse si dice che sia più raffinata di quella di un'opera buffa e si fonda nell'equivoco di mostrare grandi e solenni personaggi storici in momenti molto meno solenni, in particolar modo nei loro affanni di intrighi amorosi, dai quali non sembrano ottenere successo.
		Ecco allora la comicità può ravvisarsi in questo e viene esaltata con mezzi squisitamente musicali: in effetti se prendiamo in considerazione l'opera, mancano i contrattempi tipici dell'opera buffa, mancano le situazioni "standard" che provocano ilarità, tipiche dell'opera buffa.
		Una delle cose poi da ricordare è che vi sono pezzi strumentali all'interno dell'opera, commenti musicali, e cori che fanno uscire il SERSE dallo schema Metastasiano.
