Serve (tennis) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The serve is initiated by tossing the ball into the air and hitting it (usually near the apex of its trajectory) into the diagonally opposite service box without touching the net.
A flat serve is generally used as a first serve, when the server can afford the greater risk of hitting a fault, in an attempt to win the point outright, possibly by an ace.
The slice serve can be used to either draw the receiving player away from his initial stationary position or to "jam" him with the serve as the ball curves directly into his body.

Coaching Tips - Volley and Smash
Standing at the net and hitting volleys in practice is one thing; hitting a serve or a return and moving in behind it in a competitive situation is quite another.
Volleying involves a short blocking or punching action with your contact point just to the side and out in front of you, so you don't have to recover the racket from a follow-through.
The half volley is a shot that's forced on you - you're close to the bounce of the ball but not close enough to play a volley.

Since there are less serve and volley players out there, I believe it makes it tougher for some club players to have to face a serve and volley player since they are not used to it.
Beating a serve and volley player can be tough but if you stick to the basics you can find yourself on the winning end.
Patience: One of the main things to remember when playing a serve and volley player is to not be pressured into hitting a big shot every time you swing the racquet.

Tennis deserves a serve (and volley) - www.theage.com.au
Volleys were as rare as spectators without shirts, and this was heresy, no less.
The drop volley collapsing on impact, the half-volley on the run, the stop volley, the shoelace nudge that skids off the baseline, the high backhand volley, an entire repertoire has turned invisible.
And it is not just the volley, but the shots that came with it that assisted its execution - the chip, the charge, the nudge, the forehand block, the backhand slice off one hand - that became, and are, hard to find.

Learning to live without serve and volley
Last year, serve and volley died, was buried in an outside court, and the baseliners spat in the grave and walked off.
Of the five serve and volleyers in the top 50 today, Sampras is 31 and a prolific nappy changer, Henman is 28 but Timorous Tim scares nobody, Rusedski is 29 and in rapid decline, Max Mirnyi is 25 and makes sweeter music on the doubles court, which leaves us with the up-and-down Nicolas Escude.
Serve and volley would resuscitate comatose spectators, but as Leander Paes might tell you, it isn't going to happen soon.

Serve and Volleyer- Traditionally, this type of player uses a chip-and-charge style of play.
However, because of modern game, serve and volleyers now have to be a tiny bit more selective on when to come into the net.
Usually, this player's groundstrokes and service returns are slightly stronger than their serves and volleys.

The half volley is defined as a ball that you have to play immediately after it bounces (usually in the midcourt area).
At the 4.0 level, you’re beginning to serve more offensively, but you aren’t quite at the point where you want to serve and volley in singles, because the returner has more room in which to return the ball and her ability to return is far more developed than your ability to serve and volley.
A lot of players can’t serve and volley well because they toss the ball behind their heads, which forces them to regain their balance before they can go to the net (see figure 4.9, a-b).

The objective is to jam your opponent by serving right at her, making it difficult for her to create any angles on the return.
If you serve to the tee, your opponent’s most likely response is to hit the return toward the middle of the court.
One corollary advantage to serving to the tee is that this type of serve travels the shortest distance and over the lowest part of the net, which gives you a higher likelihood for making the serve and, in fact, hitting an ace.

The serve and volley is the most difficult, but one of the keys is to hit the first volley without going for a winner.
After you have served and you're running up to the net, the first volley you hit should be used as a vehicle to get you to the net, not as an opportunity to win the point outright.

When playing Pickle-Ball the serve must be hit underhand and each team must play their first shot off the bounce.
Points are lost by hitting the ball out of bounds, hitting the net, stepping into the non-volley zone and volleying the ball, or by volleying the ball before the ball has bounced once on each side of the net.
That is, the first receiving team must let the served ball bounce, and the serving team must let the return of serve bounce before playing it.

Solution: Because the first volley is usually hit below your waist, it is difficult to hit up on a volley and win the point.
Solution: In actuality, you will win just as many points by getting the serve in and coming into the net and your opponent failing to make the return as you will by making the first volley.
The pressure you put on your opponent by coming into volley is great -- forcing them to play out of their comfort zone.

Most serve and volleyers are tall and/or acrobatic, so the topspin will allow you to hit a lot higher without them getting to it, and keep it in the court.
IMO that's the reason why you always loose to such a player because you stated that your serve is weak so he breaks you regularly which negates the fact that sometimes you also breaks his serve.

Many coaches and players believe that playing serve and volley tennis takes extreme levels of talent, and never seriously consider adding this style of play to their tactical arsenal.
At younger ages, serving and volleying is probably not a serious option because youngsters don't have an offensive serve or the ability to get in close enough to successfully volley the return.
Learning to serve and volley is not as difficult as many players and coaches believe as long as the skill is developed incrementally, using the progression method of learning, rather than the whole method.

 Breaking Serve in Doubles
When an opponent is serving a first serve, the receiver is on the defensive, both mentally and physically, usually playing farther back in the court, and often dug in, on his or her heels.
Many players keep the same position in the court that they do for the first serve, either waiting for the ball to come to them in the backcourt, or acting surprised by a short serve and running forward to hit a defensive shot.
In fact, many second serves never even go back into play, because the receiver is either out of position or is so overconfident, he tries to hit a winner off the return.
