SAPs   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-08-06)
The protocol for each layer is concerned with providing a peer-to-peer service with the corresponding layer at the other end of the path (a hop for the lower three layers, end-to-end for the upper four).
Service Primitives are used to pass the information, and the protocol entity to which the information is delivered is called a Service Access Point (SAP).
Examples of SAPs are the type field in the Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol, the address field in HDLC, the protocol field in the IP network header, and the port identifier in UDP and TCP.

RFC 2609 (rfc2609) - Service Templates and Service: Schemes   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-08-06)
Service type templates define the syntax of service: URLs for a particular service type, as well as the attributes which accompany a service: URL in a service registration.
The service: URL that should be used, consistent with the rules in section [6], is the following: service:device-drivers:ftp://x3.bean.org/drivers/diskdrivers.drv; driver=scsi;platform=sys3.2-rs3000 Other URLs for the same service using other protocols are also supported, as in: service:device-drivers:tftp://x2.bean.org/vol3/disk/drivers.drv; driver=scsi;platform=sys3.2-rs3000 service:device-drivers:http://www.bean.org/drivers/drivpak.drv; driver=scsi;platform=sys3.2-rs3000 Using SLP, a search for the service type "device-drivers" may return all of the three URLs listed above.
One service type description is approved as a master, so that when a service type template is updated in one language, all the translations (at least eventually) reflect the same semantics.

Virtual Telecommunications Access Method (VTAM) V3R4 and later support a SAP value range of 4 to 252 (or 0x04 to 0xFC in hexadecimal representation), where 0xF0 is reserved for NetBIOS traffic.
Another point to consider when designing the ACL is that SAP values change depending on if they are commands or responses.
NetBIOS traffic uses SAP values 0xF0 (for commands) and 0xF1 (for responses).

Note: The point identified by a subnetwork address is a point of interconnection between a real end system or interworking unit and a real subnetwork (in particular, in a public data network environment, a DTE/DCE interface), and is not an OSI Service Access Point.
That is, the Network Service provider and relay-entities in particular, may take advantage of the address structure to achieve economical processing of routing aspects.
The nature of such service types is not explicitly contained in the semantics of the NSAP address.

Providing free access by the general public to the resources of the documents collection, including electronic resources, is a fundamental obligation of all Federal depository libraries (except for the highest State appellate court libraries).
Reference service offered to members of the general public using the depository must be comparable to the reference service provided to the library's primary patrons.
Competent ready reference service, indexes, and other tools to locate Government information in the collection should be available to all depository patrons.

Service Access Point - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A Service Access Point or SAP is an identifying label for network endpoints used in OSI networking.
These SAPs consist of NSAP addresses combined with optional transport, session and presentation selectors, which can differentiate at any of the three layers between multiple services at that layer provided by a network element.
Service access points are also used in IEEE 802.2 Logical Link Control in Ethernet and similar data link layer protocols.

The Service Access Point ("SAP", pronounced like the sap that comes from a tree to make maple syrup) is used to identify which protocol handler should process an incoming frame.
A Service Access Point is a data structure and identifier for a buffer area in system memory that is actually a broad concept.
In this application of a Service Access Point, the concept is very similar to that of an Ethertype value.

A service access point (SAP) identifies the characteristics of incoming calls of interest to a connection-oriented client.
By registering a SAP with a call manager or MCM driver, a client indicates that the call manager or MCM driver should notify the client of all incoming calls addressed to that SAP.

The Network Service Access Point (NSAP) is one of two types of hierarchical addresses (the other type is the network entity title) used to implement Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) Network layer addressing.
The NSAP is the logical point between the network and Transport layers where network services are delivered to the transport layer; the location of this point is identified to the OSI network service provider by the NSAP address.
