Early Medieval Hungarian Nobility   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
The servientes regis were free landowners under the jurisdiction and military authority of the ispán (comes comitatus), and they fell under the royal power.
In the narration part of the charter the king states: "nobiles regni Ungariae universi, qui servientes regales dicuntur," that is, he identified the group of the noblemen with that of the royal servitors.
Moreover, the decree secured the fundamental privileges of the servientes regis, that is to say, from this time onwards the privileges of the lesser nobility of the realm.

Many modern Hungarian historians postulate an almost total decay of the old free class and the rise of a totally new one, the servientes regis, with a status originally inferior to that of the old freemen.
Under this interpretation, the privileges granted in the Golden Bull to the 'servientes regis' apply only to this new class, while the older freemen are not mentioned in the Bull at all.
A decree issued by Béla IV in 1247 speaks specifically of 'nobiles Hungariae universi qui et servientes regis dicunter', who approach Béla with the request 'ut ipsas in libertate a S. Stephano rege statuta et abtenta dignaremus conservare'.

Yet as £100 was allowed against a series of debts in Northamptonshire ad opus familia Regis it seems likely that the familia Regis was unusually swollen, perhaps with household knights.

And he made himself a two-edged sword, with a haft in the midst of the length of the palm of the hand, and was girded therewith, under his garment, on the right thigh.
And the king's servants going in, saw the doors of the parlour shut, and they said: Perhaps he is easing nature in his summer parlour.
And waiting a long time, till they were ashamed, and seeing that no man opened the door, they took a key: and opening, they found their lord lying dead on the ground.

The Hungarian Quarterly, VOLUME XLII * No. 162 * Summer 2001
Engel describes the social hierarchy from the top, the king's tenants-in-chief, the 'counts' (comes, holding honor regis) through the wider groups of liber (iobagionis castri and 'castle folk') down to the unfree population (servus and 'slaves'), paying attention to intermediary groups like the udvornici and conditionarii (as they were called later).
The servientes regis formed the hard core of this "more or less homogeneous class"', bound together by the "liberties" recognized in the Golden Bull of 1222.
As a reaction against baronial power, the servientes regis forced the king to issue the Golden Bull of 1222, which prohibited the granting away of whole counties and listed the privileges "conferred on them by the holy king" (i.e.

Palatine (Kingdom of Hungary) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Initially (after 900) the palatine was the leader (administrator, manager) of the curia regis (Court of the king in terms of persons and institutions); he was responsible for the functioning of the Court, for its economy and internal order.
He was the judge of all "free" persons (oligarchs, servientes regis, hospites and other land owners), especially the judge of the nobles outside the capital, but in 1222 nobles were exempt from his jurisdiction.
He was also the judge of the Jászok (Alans), of the Cumanians and of the Jews.

Catholic Culture : Document Library : Papal Errors in the Ordinary Magisterium?
Since it would have been ridiculous for a Pope and Doctor of the Church to have taught that the mere presence of pleasure in marital sexual intercourse is sinful, it would be good to directly examine the text of the Pastoral Rule in question.
First of all, these theologians all give the impression that Pope Gregory is speaking about sexual pleasure in relation to moderate marital sexual intercourse, but Pope Gregory is actually speaking about sexual pleasure in relation to "immoderate" marital sexual intercourse.
Thus Pope Gregory is not criticizing the mere presence of pleasure in moderate marital sexual intercourse, rather he is criticizing the act of making pleasure the primary purpose in marital sexual intercourse by means of immoderate copulation (et cum immoderatae admixtioni servientes propagantionis articulum in usum transferunt voluptatis).

Any estimate of campaign expenditure on the rolls must therefore be treated with caution.
