Whats a servo: A quick tutorial
The servo motor has some control circuits and a potentiometer (a variable resistor, aka pot) that is connected to the output shaft.
A normal servo is used to control an angular motion of between 0 and 180 degrees.
A normal servo is mechanically not capable of turning any farther due to a mechanical stop built on to the main output gear.

How to build a PIC16F84 Servo Controller
Servo Commander was designed after quite a few people asked for a version of the serial servo controller that would let the user select a different serial port on the PC, and had the ability to control 8 servos.
The only limitation using Servo Commander with the Basic Stamp I is that you will only be able to control (7) servo motors because at least one of the (8) available I/O pins will be needed to receive serial data from the PC.
Since a value of 100 will send the servo to its far right position, this was necessary to make the motors move in the same direction as the control knobs.

 Servo Control
The output of a servo loop is a torque (or, equivalently, current) command, which is delivered to the motor control algorithms and circuits.
Servo control loops are built to control motion: position, velocity, or both.
For example, the servo system accuracy is limited by the accuracy of the feedback device and the resolution of the feedback sensor is often the major contributor to system noise.

 What is a servo?
A Servo is a small device that incorporates a three wire DC motor, a gear train, a potentiometer, an integrated circuit, and an output shaft bearing.
The electronics of a servo are pretty much the same in all servos, but the output shaft bearing of a servo has either a plastic on plastic bearing that will not take much side load or a metal on metal bearings that stand up better under extended use, or ball bearings which work best.
Servos are constructed from three basic pieces; a motor, a potentiometer (variable resister) that is connected to the output shaft, and a control board.

Given the rotation constraints of the servo, neutral is defined to be the position where the servo has exactly the same amount of potential rotation in the counter clockwise direction as it does in the clockwise direction.
Servos will not hold their position forever though, the position pulse must be repeated to instruct the servo to stay in position.
Since a servo is, at its heart, a DC gear motor with enough torque to move a small platform, servos are often modified to become drive motors.

 Servos Wiring Diagrams
Some brands of servos are really great for a particular use in a particular plane, and there are other companies that sell their servos with each different manufacturer's connector installed (you just have to ask for what you want).
For Futaba, Hitec, and JR Radio, the servo and battery connections have the right polarity and signal wires, although the connectors are physically different.
This means that if you have a Airtronics servo with one of the "Z" connectors, you won't have to switch (+) and (-) wires to use that servo with Futaba, Hitec, or JR Radio receivers.

The servo employs a clutch, which allows the pilot to override the servo by applying moderate force to the control stick.
If the slip clutch is employed for over 8 seconds, the servo will report this as an unusual activity and the control module will command a complete disconnect, allowing the pilot friction-free access to the elevator control.

Up to 20 servos positioned at full swing swing can be controlled at low-torque and up to 6 servos positioned at full swing can be controlled at high torque.
A servo manufacturer typically publishes that their servos are only able to rotate 90 degrees with some areas for adjustment.
Even with the same manufacturer and model of servo, the mechanical capability may translate to a different area of the servo, so it is important to make this adjustment for each servo in use.

Servo Motors: Theory, Hardware, and HC11 code
The kind of servo motor we are going to look into is a motor which has a feedback mechanism to sense it's position.
A typical servo consists of a DC motor, a gearhead, a potentiometer for position feedback, and a small circuit to read the pot and position the motor.
The brief explanation is to: Open the servo, remove the pot and replace it with 2 resistors to simulate the pot at it's midpoint.

 How to modify a servo
The theory behind this hack is to make the servo think that the output shaft is always at the 90 degree mark.
Since the feedback from the output shaft is disconnected, the servo will continue in the appropriate direction as long as the signal remains.
This device is not intended to be driven from the output shaft, and it may cause undo wear and tear on the servo motor.

The SST servo drive, introduced in 1994, was the first commercially available unit to employ this architecture for permanent magnet brushless motors, and to our knowledge, is the only drive of its type on the market today (although there are a number of drives available that superficially appear to employ the same architecture.).
While SST servo drives have a noticeable advantage even at zero speed, you can see that their real superiority is its near-zero response time at rated speed.
The effect of a misalignment in the electromagnetic vector is that the torque calculated by the main servo algorithm as necessary to achieve the desired velocity and position is not produced.

If the sound is short in duration, the servo will not have time to drive to "max" but will drive part way and return to "min" position.
The important thing to keep in mind when driving multiple servos is that you need a power supply that will handle the combined current of the servos.
As I mentioned at the beginning, the servo will respond to any sounds it's given, so if you have a voice track with music in the background, the servo will not only respond to the voice but the music as well.
