Semlink / Gregory the Great (Closing 11/17)
As far as Gregory using the term "servus servorum Dei" for himself, I think this applies particularly to the idea that the bishop of Rome is the successor of St. Peter.
In relation to the self-appointed title ‘servus servorum Dei’, although I understand the concerns raised by ‘jahlburn’ and ‘mchan’, I feel that it was an appropriate title for Gregory in that the good the message would have given to the church and the Roman Empire out-weighed the negative effect of Gregory’s potential spiritual pride.
Servus servorum Dei was Gregory’s means to keep his heart from recognizing the greatness of his leadership.

 Sept/Oct 1998 - Going the Distance
Madrid triumphantly concludes that the title Vicarius Filii Dei is not now, nor has it ever been, a title of the bishops of Rome, and insinuates that Protestants are merely dumb bunnies pulling this 'rabbit' out of a hat.
You may still claim that it is not today, or ever was an officially recognized papal title, but since the association with 666 apparently first surfaced in 1612, it is no real surprise that Catholics are ignorant of the facts on this matter today, or that the title is denied by Catholic apologists.
The error on the part of a newspaper staffer (and let's remember, the Catholic Church does not claim infallibility for journalists) was caught only after it had slipped into print, but the editor was obviously concerned about the incorrect answer being perpetuated, so he expunged that issue from the archives.

 Bulls and Briefs
For practical purposes a bull may be conveniently defined to be "an Apostolic letter with a leaden seal," to which one may add that in its superscription the pope invariably takes the title of episcopus, servus servorum Dei.
In the superscription the words servus servorum Dei are followed by a clause of perpetuity, e.g., in perpetuam memoriam (abbreviated into IN PP.
The formulae of imprecation, etc., at the end only occur by exception, and they are in any case more precise than those of the great bulls.

This phrase is one of the titles of the Pope and is used to refer to the Pope in the beginning address of Papal bulls.
In the years following the Second Vatican Council, Popes have used the concept of Servus Servorum Dei to help in making their office a simpler and less regal office.

Today, the bull is the only written communication in which the pope will refer to himself as episcopus servus servorum Dei, meaning "Bishop, Servant of the Servants of God." For instance, Benedict XVI, when he issues a decree in bull form, will begin the document with Benedictus, Episcopus, Servus Servorum Dei.
While it used to always bear a metal seal, it now does so only on the most solemn occasions.

Papal bull - Wikipedia Mirror US
The bull's format began with one line in tall elongated letters containing three elements: the pope's name, the pope's title (episcopus servus servorum Dei), and a phrase indicative of the bull's purpose for record keeping purposes (the incipit), from which the bull would also take its name.
There has never been an exact distinction of usage between a bull and a brief, but nowadays most letters, including Papal encyclicals, are issued as briefs.
Today, the bull is the only written communication in which the pope will address himself as episcopus servus servorum Dei, meaning "Bishop, Servant of the Servants of God." For instance, Benedict XVI, when he issues a decree in bull form, will begin the document with Benedictus, Episcopus, Servus Servorum Dei.

Seventh Day Adventists frequently contend that the papal crown has an inscription which either has “666” or “Vicarius Filii Dei” (Eng: The Vicar of the Son of God), an informal papal title that has been used very rarely.
There are a few instances in history where the pope has been referred to as the Vicar of the Son of God.
Since the Donation of Constantine did not originate with the Church, it cannot be said to prove that Vicarius Filii Dei was in any way an official title of the pope.

Every bishop is 'servus servorum Dei' (the servant of the servants of God, one of the titles held by the pope)."
Conventual Franciscan Father John J. Burkhard, a theology professor and acting president of Washington Theological Union presented a list of "practical suggestions" that could advance ecumenical relations and make the exercise of the papacy less an obstacle to Christian unity.
