Session Border Controller - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
SBCs are put into the signaling and media path between calling and called party.
Some SBCs can detect if the ends of the call are in the same subnetwork and release control of the media enabling it to flow directly between the clients, this is anti-tromboning.
An SBC may provide session media (normally Real-time Transport Protocol) and signalling (normally SIP) wiretap services, which can be used by providers to enforce requests for the lawful interception of network sessions.

What is a Session Border Controller?
A Session Border Controller (SBC) is a session-aware device that manages VoIP and MoIP calls at the borders of an IP network.
One of the key functions of Session Border Controllers is the ability to provide SIP services across NAT and Firewalls devices with may either be located at a customer premise or within the network.
Session border controllers occupy a unique position in the network architecture enabling them to control the quality of end user communications and enforce operators' Service Level Agreements.

Functionality of Existing Session Border Controller (SBC)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
SBCs may also be used to determine if a call should be admitted to a particular network, based on the current utilization and load on that network.
SBCs performing NAT traversal on the media path use the same techniques as SBCs performing traffic monitoring and shaping, and therefore, have the same set of problems associated to them.
In an access scenario, presented in Figure 3, the SBC is placed at the border between the access network and the operator's backbone network to control access to the backbone network, protect its components (media servers, application servers, gateways, etc.) from unauthorized use and DoS attacks, and monitor the signaling and media traffic.

But all session controllers are not the same, and Tier 1 carriers should be aware of the “necessary nine” key functions that will help them take their network peering to the next level and interconnect their global VoIP networks while maintaining network privacy and security.
The session controller should be able to grow the number of simultaneous sessions, the number of calls per second, the number of singularly defined customers, the number of registrations, and the number of VLANs, meaning that they can support customers that have overlapping address space.
This is a difficult task without session controllers that contain large processing power capabilities and thus are able to understand and apply policies based upon information deep in the packet headers and payloads (specifically, Layer 5 information).

 Heavy Reading
A session border controller (SBC) is a piece of network equipment or a collection of functions that control real-time session traffic at the signaling, call-control, and packet layers as they cross a notional packet-to-packet network border between networks or between network segments.
SBCs are critical to the deployment of VOIP networks, because they address the inability of real-time session traffic to cross network address translation (NAT) device or firewall boundaries.
SBCs allow NAT and firewall traversal, normally by incorporating those elements with signaling controllers for the required signaling protocols.
