Setagaya City is located in the southwest part of Tokyo’s 23 cities.
Within the city there are highways such as Tokyo Circular Routes 7 and 8, and Metropolitan Highways 3 and 4, as well as elevated and underground railways to the center of Tokyo.
Setagaya is a residential city with about 60% of its land area used for residential purposes, mainly because it is close to the center of Tokyo.

Setagaya has sister-city relationships with Winnipeg, Manitoba in Canada; the Döbling district of Vienna, Austria; and Bunbury, Western Australia.
With the abolition of the han system in 1871, the central and eastern portions became part of Tokyo Prefecture while the rest became part of Kanagawa Prefecture; in 1893, some areas were transferred to Tokyo Prefecture.
With the establishment of Setagaya Ward (an ordinary ward) in the old Tokyo City in 1932, and further consolidation in 1936, Setagaya took its present boundaries.

It was on my list of places to visit in Tokyo due to the Gotoku-ji temple, which is where the Maneki-Neko, or Beckoning Cats figures seen throughout Asia originated.
This is an interesting excursion from central Tokyo, and because it doesn't feature in either the Lonely Planet or Rough Guide guidebooks it is rarely visited by Western tourists.
