Topic: Setback (architecture)

In the News (Tue 29 Dec 09)

"Charles, Prince of Wales: architectural contributions", an appreciation by Nikos A. Salingaros
The school became embroiled in the British architectural debate, and was identified as a backward-looking stronghold of conservatism.
In that context, all architectural theories are a matter of personal preference, and in Orwellian fashion, the one with the strongest political support suppresses all the others.
If architectural patronage were a truly democratic system, then there would be no debate at all: the Prince's ideas would now be in use all over the world to create a human environment.

For instance, setback and spacing between buildings may be more important than roof forms or materials since there is more variety of the last two criteria on most streets.
Setback, spacing, and general massing of the new dwelling are the most important criteria that should relate to the existing historic structures.
For these guidelines, setback is defined generally as the area between the street and the wall of the building.

The architectural sacrifices forced upon the design by inflated security concerns and a gluttonous developer are contemptible.
While the setback issue could still be debated, the fact is that in the rather hyper-terror-sensitive environment we live in now, the likelihood of a car bomb is as likely as a repeat of the 9/11 attacks.
Rather than welcoming the next generation of architectural masterpieces with open arms, the architecturally ignorant are trying to intrude where they don't belong, trying to, in their minds, improve upon the masters.

Kahn conceived that there was a need for an architectural conception that would allow the communicating networks to function as peers of each other, rather than requiring that any one become a component of another.
The critical aspect of the Internet's development is the ability to develop an architecture that asks as little as possible of the collaborating networks and that treats each network as a peer of the other, rather than subordinating any network to any other.
This architecture, called by Kahn "open architecture", is the critical principle of the Internet.(32) This architecture means that each network wanting to interconnect and to communicate does not have to ask any other network for permission to join.

These boxes may be cubes or higher or lower boxes, but if nothing further is done to them, they will remain, in suggestion, as simply one box on another and they cannot in the mass suggest a unified design."
While Rapp's twenty-nine story pyramidal mass applied the zoning requirements quite literally, they added some ornamentation -- stubby obelisks atop each of the eight setbacks, a glass sphere at the top, and a huge clock.

Although this lull is undoubtedly considered a setback, one positive by-product may be that it offers a period of relative calm, removed from the heated polemics of an earlier period, to reflect on feminist historical writing and to reexamine its methods and premises.
