Paper on Browning's "Caliban on Setebos"
"Caliban on Setebos" was one of Robert Browning's more popular poems among the Victorians, for its presumed satire of orthodox Calvinism, Puritanism, and similarly grim Christian sects.
And Browning as Shakespeare's savage does indeed seem to hurl a few barbs in that direction, but the poet's exercise seems to be as much one in alternative theology.
Some of Browning's detractors considered "Caliban on Setebos" still to be brutish, for its harsh language and unpleasant philosophy.

Poetry and Magic - The Wheel of Fortune
Setebos, the devil-god consort of Shakespeare's great witch, Sycorax, in The Tempest, is another form of Lord Jagannath, Lord of the Universe, and it is under his name that the Whirlings of this poem take place.
In Sylvia's poem, the Elm is a creature of the Moon, it has the feathered nature of the swine-crow Sycorax, and the snaky fury of Medusa: it was this awful Goddess's energies which Ted heard and feared as he lay (like Shakespeare's Ariel) in "the labyrinth of a cowslip" whilst her storm raged about them.
With this in mind, it is possible to see 'Setebos' as marking an important step in Ted's own journey to spiritual rebirth, as well as marking the Jungian "alchemical individuation" of Sylvia's "self" which he traces in 'Sylvia Plath and her Journals'.

RPO -- Robert Browning : Caliban upon Setebos
Throughout he looks at his own characteristics, and then ascribes them to his god, Setebos: "So he." What is conspicuous in the poem is that there is no glimpse of what to Browning is true theology: the theology of a God of Love.
His Setebos is merely a God of arbitrary and jealous power.
It is also noteworthy that Browning includes in Caliban's theology not merely most of the doctrines of primitive religions, but also some elements associated with branches of Christianity, particularly the narrower kind of Calvinist sect.

nthposition online magazine: Dobeliou and Caliban
Listening to the President speaking, I heard a similarity between Dobeliou's extemporaneous speech and Caliban's diction in Robert Browning's dramatic monologue "Caliban Upon Setebos" (1864), in which Caliban describes and rationalizes his world as he imagines it to have been created and is now ruled by his god Setebos, a Jehovah-like figure.
Setebos, Caliban's god, is a demiurge, a god of the palpable world only, a god of Caliban's mind, who in his ignorance does not know any greater god.
The motto of "Caliban Upon Setebos" is a line from Psalm 50: "Thou thoughtest that I was such a one as thyself," in which Jehovah tells mankind that he is wrong to ascribe human qualities to Him.

The Setebos Machine decided that rather than play second fiddle to an aging blaster, he would go out into the city on his own and provide support to many of Paragon's heroes.
With these powers, the Setebos Machine is both an excellent hero and a terrifying threat.

It is in his or her attempt torepresent, discursively, the colonist that the colonial subject both mocks and menaces the colonial model, and issimultaneously, in being labelled inappropriate, controlled by it.
In this extract from "Caliban upon Setebos", mimicry is explicit: Caliban "[p]lays thus at being Prosper".
And hence, Caliban is led to believe, if he can but name Prosper and Setebos in ways which limit their ability to name him in return, he will have the power he wants: for instance, Caliban talks about Setebos when he can't be heard, and he spies on Prosper unseen.

But the conflict soon spreads far beyond mere humankind and their ancient gods, pitting Beings with incredible powers against one another and humanity – entities with names such as Setebos, Night, Prospero, Caliban, Sycorax, and the Demogorgon – thereby threatening the existence of every living being in our solar system and beyond.
Meanwhile, in a different reality, a lovely but decadent human civilization is under attack from its feral former servants, the robotlike voynix.
