Sethian - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sethians are so called for their veneration of the biblical Seth, third son of Adam and Eve, who is depicted in their myths of creation as a divine incarnation; consequently, the offspring or 'posterity' of Seth are held to comprise a superior elect within human society.
Commonly, the Sethian cosmogonic myth describes an intended prologue to the events of Genesis and the rest of the Pentateuch, which by its emendation brings about a radical reinterpretation of the typical orthodox jewish conception of creation, and the divine's relation to reality.
The Sethian conception of God is, by contrast, defined through negative theology exclusively: he is immovable, invisible, intangible, ineffable; commonly, 'he' is seen as being hermaphroditic, a potent symbol for being, as it were, 'all-containing' but identity wise hermaphroditic.

Berkeley Lab Mathematician James Sethian Receives Prestigious Norbert Wiener Prize in Applied Mathematics
Sethian's earliest work included an analysis of the motion of flame fronts and of the singularities they develop; he found important new links between the motion of the fronts and partial differential equations.
Sethian (with S. Osher) extended this work through an implicit formulation, resulting in a methodology that has come to be known as the 'level set method,' because it represents a front propagating in n dimensions as a level set of an object in (n + 1) dimensions.
Sethian's mathematical description of etching and deposition in the manufacture of computer chips has illuminated processes such as ion milling, visibility, resputter, and material-dependent etch rates; the resulting algorithms are now an indispensable part of industrial semiconductor fabrication simulations throughout the world.

SETHIAN GNOSTICISM:   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
In particular, the Sethian baptismal water was understood to be of a celestial nature, a Living Water identical with light or enlightenment, and the rite itself must have been understood as a ritual of cultic ascent involving enlightenment and therefore salvation.
This is quite obvious in the case of the Sethian rite of cultic or individual ascent, and also in the theme of the descent of the redeemer bearing the Five Seals.
It may be that the Sethians' gradual shift away from their original communal baptismal context, interpreted by means of a rich history of their primordial origins and salvation, towards the more ethereal ancl individualistic practice of visionary ascent contributed to the event lal decay and diffusion of those who identified with the Sethian traditions.

TO SEE THE LIGHT:   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
In particular, the Sethian baptismal water was understood to be of a celestial nature, a Living Water identical with light or enlightenment, and the rite itself seems to have been conceived as a series of visionary experiences resulting in complete enlightenment and therefore total salvation.
Clearly, the knowledge of the nature of the Sethian encounter with both Platonism and Christian forms of gnostic Sethianism would help to resolve the puzzle of ritual origins, assuming that their various forms are not merely the result of free invention.
The specifically Sethian gnostic portrayal of the rite resulted from an equation between the idea of a contemporary appearance of the primordial Seth to rescue his seed and the similar appearance of the pre-existent Christ in the person of Jesus, such that the two figures were identified.

Distinctly Sethian features are missing, however, such as the elevation of the seed of Seth, the divine Adamas-Autogenes, and his four Lights, features which it seems that Irenaeus would surely have described had his source employed the anthropogony and history of salvation underlying the extant versions of the Apocryphon of John.
This is the only direct reference to the Sethian baptismal rite of the Five Seals in the longer version of the Apocryphon of John; this singularity and its absence from the shorter versions suggests that the conferral of this rite was not an original feature of the Apocryphon of John.
The initial Sethian rapprochement with Christian ideas, ranging between positive in the case of the Apocryphon of John, the Hypostasis of the Archons, and Melchizedek, and more polemical in the case of the Trimorphic Protennoia and the Gospel of the Egyptians, and perhaps neutral in the Apocalypse of Adam, may have proved a liability.

 The Sethian Gnostics
The term "Sethian Gnostics" is a modern one; and some scholars have even suggested this is a totally artificial classification.
But it is apparent that a number of Nag Hammadi texts do share a great deal in common as regards their cosmology and terminology, so for the sake of convenience we can refer to these as "Sethian".
The Sethians are so-called because, naturally, they hold the biblical character of Seth up as a savior-figure.

In Sethianism, the Autogenes (self-begotten) Son could be identified as Adamas (alias Geradamas) or as the Triple Male Child (cf.
Thus, because of the traditional Sethian association of the Triple Male with the divine Adam who is both self-begotten and was the first to appear, the treatises of the "Allogenes group" consistently associate him with the Aeon of Barbelo, but on a more specific level vacillate between associating him with Protophanes or with Autogenes.
This is a natural Neopythagorean Platonic interpretation of the rather more mythological and traditional Sethian speculation on the bisexual nature of the Man (the high deity in whose image mankind is made) and Son of Man (the archetypal Adam) figures deduced from Genesis 1:26-27.

Sethian first saw the light of day in 1998 in the small finnish town of Savonlinna, when two old friends (Wilska and Koponen) started discussing a band, based on good solid music and songs rather than an image.
The birth of Sethian was imminent when the band that they both were in at the moment, Nattvindens GrĂ¥t (Wilska as the voice and Koponen as the guitarist) broke up.
The first years of the band went in search of ”a few good men”, and their first demo (later published on the Black Widow Records compilation ”Not Of This Earth”) was made with a couple of old friends, Tuomas Holopainen from NG and Nightwish, and Sami Karttunen (later the drummer of Disco).

Sethian Gnosticism derives its name from Seth, the third son of Adam, who was considered to be the mediator of divine knowledge to mankind.
In the Sethian writings the creator god is known by the Semitic name Yaldabaoth, but he is also referred to as "the fool" and "the blind god".
In the latest research, Sethian Gnosticism is beginning to be considered as one of the earliest forms of gnostic thought, indeed as a certain kind of "classical Gnosticism", from which later forms of Gnosticism such as Valentinianism gradually developed.

A Fast Marching Method of Computing Closest Points
To calculate the closest points to a surface on a regular grid, we utilize Sethian's fast marching method, but instead of using a finite difference scheme to compute distance, we use a heuristic algorithm to propogate closest points information.
While Sethian's level set method computes distance, the algorithm presented here computes the closest points, (from which the distance can be calculated).
The error in the distance using Sethian's level set method is proportional to the spacing of the distance grid.
