  The Setian Plague
Setianism is just one more likeness of elementary ideas derived from ancient mythology (egyptian) where humans try to emulate the "gods" and deities (which are merely personifications of attitude).
Setians encourage each other to succumb to the fantasies of their leaders whom they woo and charm.
This "knowing" alleged by "divine" Setians (the TS priesthood) is based on the hallucinations, misinterpretations, and self-deceit of those who initially formed the TS and its dogma.

Growth and development is understood as immersion in the Setian philosophy, personal maturity and skill in the art of magic.
Setians recognize several levels or degrees of initiation, and identify their members by their degree.
As a religion Setians believe in Set and work with Set, but do so more as if he were a father, elder brother, or close friend, rather than a god as defined by most religions.

He or she is directly empowered by Set and charged him to expand the Setian experience -- this includes everything form running the Temple, which belongs to its Priesthood, to a variety of scholarly, artistic, or (obviously) magical endeavors to increase the Setian mindscape.
The Fourth Degree Setian is the founder of a school of thought in the Temple, which may effect the general philosophical and magical actions of mankind as well.

Setians themselves, however, did not then and do not now consider Set an evil figure, nor consider the Setian religion merely a refutation of conventional religion.
Setians perceive the universe as a non-conscious but ordered environment within which Set has, over a period of millennia, altered the genetic development of at least one form of life to create a species humanity possessing an enhanced, self-conscious intelligence.
DV To me, setianism is only the latest in a series of newreligions that Satanism has given birth to, or helped give birth to.

 Balanone's Temple of Set FAQ - allanswers.org
Some (many?) Setians prefer the terms "Setian philosophy," "Setian religion," and "Setian way of life" over the term "Setianism." I find "Setianism" a convenient term to use when I am referring specifically to the Setian way of life, or to any combination of these ideas.
We prefer to avoid discussing simply Setian philosophy and religion or Satanism in alt.pagan, since those are more appropriate to alt.satanism, but the relationships between Setian philosophy and religion and other Pagan philosophies and religions are on-topic and suitable for that newsgroup.
There are probably fewer Setians on this newsgroup than on the other two, but there should be enough visiting soc.religion.paganism to hold a meaningful discussion when necessary.

 Religious Setianism
I think it is vital to distinguish religious Setians - such as myself, Balanone, Magister Kelly, and others - as particular aspects of the process of Self improvement and individual growth we call XEPER.
It was as a result of MY Xeper that I became a religious Setian, that is where MY Work led me. However, what constitutes the elements which manifest as this "religious understanding" for me may very well not work for anyone else, nor ideally should it (except for those wondrous cases of synchronicity).

Setianism is supposedly an ancient, generally misunderstood religion based upon the Ancient Egyptian god Set.
Setianism and Satanism are so strikingly similar that they are often confused with one another by people not associated with either.
You were right because the Temple was founded in 1975, but the founders didnt necessarily 'break away' from Satanism, rather they saw things that they thought was wrong with Satanism, and used it as a sort of guideline, but I don't think they were ever affiliated.

Setianism is built around the concept of being true to yourself....
I can see how it applies very well, especially if the Setian actually believes in some Set Being-Entity-GOD and supports the ascetic and restrictive disciplines necessary for 'transcending this plane of existence' or something.
I have noticed that the Setian ideology does imply an 'exceptional' or 'alienated' human as regards Nature, and this may be some of what TJ is trying to point out.

 Pretenders to the Throne
The essence of Setian doctrine asserts that Set caused the intelligence of the human species to manifest, and that this conscious act is counter to the “inertia”of Nature.
This is not expected by them to occur in a single lifetime, and so the “isolated consciousness” of the individual Setian attempts to “Remanifest,” essentially to reincarnate, to continue the process of evolution towards a Set-like final state.
From personal observation and reading their literature, it would seem that the Setians have a consuming preoccupation with rank and status within their organization, thus titles and medallions indicating degree level are eagerly sought by members to affirm their position in the pecking order of the Temple’s internal world (particularly evident at their conclaves).

 Temple of Set - Hyperborea
As Setians we are first of all focused on Xeper, that is an individual process of Coming Into Being, and to that end we are applying rational inquiry, logic, Initiatory philosophy and magic - not prayers nor unquestionable beliefs nor dogma, nor ready-made moral codes, nor plain sense of the "sacred".
My understanding is that a Setian "religious" experience refers to an Initiate´s conscious experience of her separate Self, of being aware of one´s conscious existence, its Idea, of the borders and Potential of one´s Being via one´s pursuit of Xeper.
I would, however, as a "religious" Setian myself, be interested in finding a better, more precise and less tainted concept than the Right Hand Path saturated "religion" to describe the experience from the Left Hand Path, Setian point of view - that of Xeper.

The reason you are getting so many different answers is more than likely because their are different 'brands' of Satanism, just like there are many denominations of Christianity.
Setianism, Luciferianism, eclectic, traditional/theistic, are just a few of the different brands.
In my experience, what most Satanists have in common is a strong belief in themselves and their abilities, they walk what is known as 'the Left-Hand Path', and are non-conformist.

Webb appears to be saying that 'Setians and Satanists (distinguishing the two) have common interests and objects of focus as regards Set and Satan (esp. as they are rebels against injustice, a development Promethean within Shelley's _Prometheus Unbound_ and the works of many others).
Hence it is # sometimes necessary to use the "Satanic" metaphor to initially # communicate with J/C-socialized individuals concerning the Setian # interests and capabilities they are otherwise incapable of expressing.
I see, so you are making possible the conversion of Satanists (as they might self-identify) to Setian philosophy by virtue of your understanding of its psychospiritual reflection in the character of the Christian anti-god.

These range from the literal worship of a malevolent spiritual being (Theistic Satanism); to a kind of subversive ritual performance stressing the mockery of Christian symbols (most notably the “Black Mass”); to the claimed rediscovery of an ancient but misunderstood religion (e.g.
Setianism, which conflates Satan with the Egyptian god Set); to the exaltation of hedonistic recreation, and the celebration of selfishness and pleasure.
The most prominent and widely known Satanist in recent years is, and was Anton Szandor LaVey, who founded the “Church of Satan” in 1966.

Tienda Virtual - Uncle Setnakt's Essential Guide to the Left Hand Path
I never thought I would be reviewing a book about a subject that is generally lumped-in with "Satanism," but after many long email conversations with rational individuals, and reading a lot of "Uncle Setnakt's" views and columns online, I decided to give this book a chance.
I am actually very impressed with this "Guide to The Left Hand Path." As I read the book, I remember thinking, "What, Satanism with Manners?" Apparently, the Setians figured out some things that a lot of Satanists I have met would be better off to practice, as well.
I would recommend this book to everyone who is taking his first steps on slippery "occult" ground, and wondering how true initiation looks like.
