Соnsеquеntlу, the great Setsuko Hara portrays a young wоmаn named Noriko in both movies, but this timе, she is the liberated daughter (rather than the forlorn daughter-in-law) and also thе focal point of thе story (rather than the aged parents in "Tokyo Story").
Hara continues tо be a revelation to me, a beautiful, charismatic actress whо radiates goodness and a sense оf cunning mischief that is еntrаnсing.
She and Hara have a раrtiсulаrlу lovely scene on the beach at thе end of the film, аnd the two have a pretty funny sсеnе where they hide their clandestine cake slices from the somnambulant сhild.

 Setsuko Hara
This screen persona became hers and, in any event, Ozu would not have created his character this way had it not been Setsuko Hara for whom he was writing.
This was conveyed in the Setsuko Hara style, to be sure, with some show of hesitation, sudden smiles shining through the doubt, but this was one Hara performance, the only one, that was not appreciated.
For the first time since her 1935 debut she was severely criticized, not so much for wanting to retire as for the manner in which this desire was presented.

Slant Magazine - Film Review: Sudden Rain
For those familiar with Hara's typically incandescent screen presence this is less of an insult than pure blasphemy, though it's all to director Mikio Naruse's subversive point.
A typically subdued, perpetually smiling presence in many Yasujiro Ozu films (a persona also on display in Naruse's own Daughters, Wives and a Mother), Hara in Sudden Rain uses her trademark beatific grin as a kind of Noh-theater disguise masking a virulent emotional undercurrent.
From first frame to last, Fumiko and Ryotaro engage in the most vicious verbal battles, hurling insults both subtle and bald-faced as they navigate the treacherous terrain of a marriage gone stale.

Paste Magazine :: Review :: Late Spring (Page 1)
It’s the story of a widowed father and his daughter, played by two of Ozu’s favorite actors, Chishu Ryu and Setsuko Hara, and—like many of Ozu’s films—it’s deeply affecting even though it completely lacks the elements that drive most tear-jerkers: villains and stupidity.
No, this movie is about good souls trying to balance their own needs with those of the people they care about.
Hara plays a woman of marrying age in post-war Japan who is content to stay home and care for her aging father instead of setting out on her own.
