The Inter-Uviversity Forced Migration Conference 2005 Rarely do professionals from the diverse sectors that work on forced migration issues have the opportunity to engage in discourse, and our goal is to encourage dialogue between academics, refugees, practitioners, government officials, representatives of international organizations, students, and community members in stimulating panel discussions that seek to create synergies and increased collaboration. Political History of the Lumbee Indians For many southeastern tribes and others across North America, migration and change became the norm, rather than tumultuous interruptions that contributed to the demise of life and culture. Lawson concluded that these Indians were none other than the descendants of the lost John White expedition, or "Lost Colony of Roanoke." White Settler Colonialism and the Political Economy of Labour Migration These are two distinct, though interlocking, processes, the first of which concerns the colonial land grab which dispossessed Maori, the second of which concerns the Maori labour migration, recruitment and settlement, necessary to provide a workforce for an emerging capitalist society. The political turbulence created in the wake of the industrial revolution and the French revolution, had enormous implications for the social and economic relations which were to emerge in the European colonies around the world. Yang Indian Convict Workers in Southeast Asia in the Late Eighteenth and Early Nineteenth Centuries Journal of World History, 14.2 The History Cooperative Thus, the flow of convicts from South to Southeast Asia, which was part of a global system of forced migration, came to an end, its termination ushered in by the political threat that the latest batch of convicts posed to the effectiveness of the existing system of convictism. The two forms of labor were nonetheless closely interrelated: the closing down of the slave trade (banned in theory by the British parliament in 1807) and the subsequent abolition of slavery in many areas of the region exacerbated labor shortages. IOM Pays Slave Labourers Under Swiss Banks Settlement: 436 members of certain persecuted groups have received full payment for their claims IOM is one of the implementing organizations of the Swiss Banks Settlement, an agreement reached between Holocaust survivors and Swiss banks in 1999 that resulted from litigation before the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York. The US$ 1.25 billion Settlement Fund serves to compensate for deposits in Swiss banks owned by Holocaust victims that were never returned to them or their heirs, and to pay compensation for former slave labourers and certain other victims of the Nazi regime.
