Settlers of Catan, Seafarers expansion - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Another suggested new rule is that the board is not laid down complete, but several hex tiles are treated as "unexplored territory": the player who first reaches an unexplored tile turns it face-up and may take one resource as a reward for exploring.
See the detailed rules article Settlers of Catan, Rules for comprehensive description of the combined rules for Settlers and Seafarers.
The rules for building and placing apply just the same, though your resource demand is wood and sheep as opposed to wood and brick.

But the rules are ambiguous in a few places, and I'm curious to hear other Settlers players' opinions about what should happen in these cases.
Incidentally, if the alleged rule against uncompensated trades -- that is, trades in which one player's compensation is not in the form of resource cards received immediately -- is taken seriously, it could eliminate some other strategies that are sometimes used in my circle of friends.
Another strategy that could be eliminated by the rule against uncompensated trades is triangular trade with delayed payments (e.g., I agree to give Jim a sheep for a wood, take the wood, make a trade using the wood to get a sheep from Bob, and then give the sheep to Jim).

Each land tile represents a different type of terrain, producing one of the five raw materials used in the game: wool from pasture, corn from arable, clay bricks from hills, timber from forests and ore from mountains.
The rule that no two settlements can be adjacent to each other also lends strategic importance to the placing of settlements.

Early Settlers   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
Settlers are people who have travelled of their own choice, from the land of their birth to live in "new" lands or colonies.
The colony concerned is often, but not always, controlled by the government of a settler's home country, and emigration is usually, but not always, approved by an imperial government.
The term settler is not usually used in relation to the later histories of well-established and/or independent, postcolonial countries with continuing immigration, like the present-day United States, Canada or Australia, where terms like immigrants are preferred.
