IGUK Blog: The Settlers of Catan Review
The Settlers of Catan was released in 1995, and is widely recognised as a superb example of German-style game mechanics as well as a perfect game to bridge the gap between more mainstream fare such as Monopoly, and heavier German-style games such as Tigris & Euphrates.
Catan’s status as the perfect gateway game isn’t necessarily the case any more – games such as Carcassonne and Ticket to Ride are, in my opinion anyway, much more suited to introducing players to German-style games – but it is still a fantastic game of resource management and territory building.
With expansions available that add seafaring exploration (The Seafarers of Catan) and politics and warfare (The Cities and Knights of Catan), Catan is also a nicely expandable experience, which certainly adds value for players who may tire of the base game.

Settlers has become quite popularly known as a family game, and I’ve rarely seen the game fail in a group.

New Catan is easier to play for those who have already played the original game at least once or a few times, although this is not a requirement.
A typical game takes between 75 and 100 minutes to play, although the actual time varies considerably depending on the number of players, the resource configuration on the game board and, most importantly, the time spent by players thinking about their moves in addition to the minimum time required for trading and building.

Settlers of Catan, by Klaus Teuber (Oceania, Starship Catan and many more), is one of the classic games of all time, if there were to be a list of board games that changed the face of the hobby, Settlers of Catan would sit as the herald of the modern boom in euro-games.
Settlers of Catan uses a very enjoyable ‘trade’ system, where players can exchange amongst each other, various resources important in the game, this system works brilliantly not only as a game system element, but also as way of causing the players of the game to interact in a fun and meaningful, game-orientated, way.

The Cities and Knights of Catan (German: Städte und Ritter) is an expansion to the board game Settlers of Catan for three to four players (five to six player play is also possible with the Settlers and Cities and Knights five to six player expansions).
It contains features taken from the Settlers of Catan, with emphasis on city development and the use of knights, which are used as a method of attacking other players as well as helping opponents defend Catan against a common foe.
Cities and Knights can also be combined with the Seafarers of Catan expansion (again, five to six player play only possible with the Seafarers five to six player expansion), although players are not recommended to use the Cities and Knights rules in Seafarers scenarios where exploration is a gameplay element.
